Trouble logging in sometimes (again)
Well it seems to be happening again. I had this kind of trouble a week or so ago, had to reset my password wait a bit, and was able to log into LQ.
Now it just happened again. I did make sure I was typing my password correctly and username. Browser settings were fine, no cookies being dumped, or any 'special' addons, others than Adblock for Firefox. Plus LQ was the only forum giving me this kind of trouble. Obviously I can now login again, but not after resetting my password twice. Phew -- I just realized I accidently posted this in the news section, so mods when you see it, delete. Sorry! |
Is this happening to anyone else? I can't see how Adblock would possibly be an issue, but next time it happens can you disable it and try again just to rule it out? Any additional information may help us ensure this doesn't happen again (if it is indeed something on the LQ side).

@Jeremy: Sorry, I forgot to mention that the FF I was on at the time was on a school computer: Adblock was not installed, and all other settings were on the standard settings, no cookies being cleared or anything. It was version FF version 3.6.
Right now I am at home, running FF3.6 WITH adblock, and no cookies or anything deleted; I was able to login. Hope that helps somewhat. |

I've tested a stock 3.6 FF on all 3 major platforms, so we can rule out a stock install with a properly working network being an issue.

Linux Questions has the very same problem that Linux forums just fixed
I have not logged into Linux Questions for a while. I did so today using my Seamonkey browser on my Ubuntu 8.04os and i just have dial up!!
Linux Forums just got through straightening out their website from the very same aggravating problem of " invalid log in " showing up. The problem at Linux forums was also compounded by the load freezing at openx and kona kentara. I see some of the same website ads being loaded so maybe one of them is the culprit. I do not know if both websites are owned by the same entity or maintained by the same company but this is aggravating. I am using my Konqueror browser which is not affected by whatever the problem is. This is just astonishing!!! |
You can view the Linux Forums log in thread here;
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/com...tml#post762514 What are the odds of two Linux websites being plagued by the very same problem at the same time?? Is the Gates Gang at work in this??? |
It's unlikely the problems are related, but we're in no way affiliated with Linux Forums.

FWIW, "plagued" seems pretty severe. We're happy to look further into the issue of course, but we have 1,000's of members log in each and every day and I may get 3 or so login-related complaints a month...

Assuming nothing is wrong from both sides (server and browser), it may just be a slight network glitch? This seems to be one of those types of 'issues' that is too vague perhaps, and such a small amount of users affected, not much can be done.

Jeremy both Linux Questions and Linux Forums use some of the very same ad servers where it seems that this problem comes from. At LF the problem has been happening for over three months!
At LF the problem happened to a variety of different users using different linux os. Broadband, wireless, or dial-up was not the deciding factor. Hopefully the moderators at LF will eventually be informed about what steps were taken, and just where they were taken; and it may be that the moderators will be kind enough to post that information. |
cousinlucky,
While it's possible the issues are linked, I'm not sure why you're so adamant they are given only anecdotal evidence at best. After taking a quick look I do see a single common ad server, but we DON'T serve ads on our login page AT ALL, so that's unlikely to be the issue. --jeremy |
In working with 2 members outside this thread, manually deleting all LQ-related cookies immediately solved the issue. Is anyone who's tried that still having an issue?

Jeremy I am one of those rare people that does not care to use my firefox browser. However, it does log me into Linux Questions normally so I am going to use firefox to visit LQ in the future to avoid the invalid log-in problem!!
Jeremy I have 15 profiles on my Seamonkey browser. I discovered something tonight; my main Seamonkey profile produces the invalid log in pop up at both LF and LQ but if I use a different Seamonkey profile I do not have the problem and I get logged in right away. Is it at all possible that a virus or malware can be embedded on just one or two Seamonkey profiles without the other profiles being affected by the malware?? |
