I post in this forum because what I'm gonna say is related to Linux in a general manner.
Jeremy: Could it be possible for you to add to the Distributions forum a forum about Red Hat & Mandrake? I dare to ask this of you, because many of the people (including myself) who come to ask questions here use either Red Hat Linux or Mandrake Linux. What I'd think could be benifficial:
1. Use the other forums (no distro specific) to ask general questions about hardware, software, configuration, etc. common to every Linux distribution.
2. Use the distribution forums to ask specific questions about some tools inlcuded only with that distribution, configuration schemes of the distribution in question, arrangement of the startup scripts, root directory layout, etc; distribution specifics.
I know it my not be possible or justifiable to do so, I just thought it could be a good idea.
You know, I never really understood the distro forums. Why only certain distros have there own forum is beyond me. On the other hand, if each distro had its own forum then there would be no need for things like the General forum. I think people would just post all there RedHat issues in the RedHat forum and there Slackware issues in the Slackware forum.
I just don't get it. Do the current distro forums(i.e. Debian, Slackware, LFS) deserve special attention when compared to other distros?

There is a reason behind this in which its been mentioned probably several dozens of times.
We only make a distro to have or make it somewhat official as we have a representative from each distro helping out being a member on the forums.
Originally posted by Crashed_Again So you haven't found anyone who is willing to be a RedHat or Mandrake representative?
AFAIK talks with Redhat looked promising, then they stopped responding.
Some of the others I do believe Jeremy was in contact with, but not many or no responses yet. Maybe we'll get some of their attention at LW in August..

Rep:
I have been in contact with SuSE and Red Hat in the past. Both were interested in being represented here. I will continue to pursue both of these (and other) leads and will post info as soon as I have it.
My main interest in a Red Hat forum is because some of its configuration files and startup scripts, though common to distributions made upon that starndard have it, have their own oddities and singularities. For example, some weeks ago, I was palying around with my Gentoo system, with the problem that I could not get the alsasound service to start up at boot time. I was trying to make that the way I knew in Red Hat, ovbiously did not work in Gentoo. Well, many other distros differ from one-another in this regards. I think the rest of the Linux forums are just quite good, but for example in my case that I face a specific problem in Red Hat that renders my system to a freeze when burning CD's, is simply not common in other distros, so a Red Hat (Mandrake, etc) forum would be, in my case the place to post this problem.
