ok rickh... I see a difference in the 'collective' tagging method and the 'individual' tagging method. (you use the individual one)

the collective tagger tags with the whole user-ship in mind. There are broad tags to categorize questions that could go in many sub forums (hardware, networking, laptop etc) but obviously must only go in one. The collective tagger tries to use standard methods of tagging, and hopes that the tags will be useful to aid searches.

the individual tagger likes tags, and uses them as a way to flag posts for future reference. A bookmarking system. The individual tagger is ok with removing tags that have no further use to them.

Perhaps, rickh, you could use LQ bookmarks as a way of flagging posts/threads (possibly can only do so with threads) instead of the tags. There is no limit to the top 15 bookmarks, and you can use it to easily find threads long after you remember them.

(I hope this can't be taken as a personal attack, it isn't meant to be.)

I've tried to clarify and restart this debate... here is a new thread asking for ideas on what tags are to the LQ population.

I'm on your new thread, and I'm in general agreement with whatever you've contributed to this one. I'm not trying to establish or defend any particular plan or method of tagging. Under the current situation, I just can't see any value in the tags apart from what you define as the "individual" method.

I would be happy to participate in any organized method which would provide improvements, but as long as any user is allowed to tag any thread in any way he sees fit ... there is no hope for an increase in community value from them.
