Tagging at LQ
You may have noticed that we recently moved all tagging at LQ from a post context to a thread context. We believe this simpler approach will promote more tag use and be more powerful in the long run. Some of the functionality that we had intended post-level tagging to address will be implemented via other ways. As always, feedback is welcome.

nice to see I can add tags with spaces now, thank you :)

I've started to cleanup tags and the top 100 list (http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/tags/) looks substantially better than it did. I'll be removing superfluous or clearly unneeded tags, merging tags and doing further cleanup over the next few days. If you have any suggestions on how we can improve this feature or can make it more useful, let me know.

Currently the newbies and new members are also allowed to tag the threads and since most of them have no idea how and why to do it, they end up with tags like "help", "wtf", "question" etc..
I have noticed the newbies on LinuxExchange are not allowed to create the new Tags, they have to choose from the previous ones (This is helpful since it prevents the misuse of tag creation). I don't know what they do there when the desired tags are not pre-existing in the tag-cloud. If you could explain that mechanism here then may be some ideas can be mixed up to create a better tagging technique ! The new tag bar is not easily visible/noticeable either. |

So now here have you limited tag creation to "Senior members" only ? If so what are newbies supposed to do if they require a tag which is not already available in the cloud ?

Unlike LE, threads at LQ do not *need* to be tagged, so they can proceed as normal without the tag. They can optionally post a note in the content of their thread asking for a particular tag.

Tags are missing today ?
( Can't use essential tags for search any more ? And cannot refer to a 'tag', a tagged thread / post. ) Will they be enabled again ? Kind Regards knudfl. .. |
knudfl, tags should not be "missing" in any way. Keep in mind that moving forward, tags will apply to threads and *not* to posts, so the layout is different. You can still search for tags on the search page, on the tags page or by clicking on a tag at the bottom of a thread. If you have any other questions, let me know.

Post #9 , jeremy : Thank you, I found the new "Tags".
A bit of a hideaway location, isn't it ? ... But anyway, much worse is : I had numerous posts cross referenced to other posts by 'Tag Names'. Those tags are now missing. Example : 'ns2' threads tagged : ns2, ns226, ns227, ns234, etc. etc. All gone. (Except for one thread, I "re-tagged" five minutes ago.) Text, quote : "Please read other posts tagged ns227". What to do ? It will be a huge job to reestablish all that. ...... |

The Tags bar could be placed on the top of the thread rather than the bottom, it would be more visible. Moreover, I wanted to tag a thread, "wireless", it had 21 replies , I had to scroll down a very long page to get the tag bar

You are talking about the "Page up" / "Page down", ;) I can't move up back by "Page up" after I have moved down with "Page down". I don't know whats the problem here ! Firefox 3.6.10

Hi,

Page Up and Page Down scrolls one page up or down (which might not be the top/bottom of the page). HOME and END go to the actual top or bottom of the page (no matter the length). |
