Suggestions for your site

Make it more intuitive. Really it is very poor for a new user.
You asked me, after I joined, to intoduce myself in "our LQ Member intro forum" - stuffed if I could find it.
What about the hyper link to "first question" - that must be somewhere near God as I could not find it either.
OK I confess I am new to linux - brand new - but I am not a novice user - have bought a new computer just for linux - I am looking at switching our whole organisation to linux but I am not having a good run so far (too much sad detail to go into here).
For reasons of information only I am a qualified software engineer with a degree and a lot of development experience - once - a few years ago with Unix.
I would like to help mitigate the M/S monopoly and hope you can help make the transition a bit easier.

Perhaps things will get better.

You are welcome to check my bona fidies I have provided my details on registration - not intro as I know not where it is.

Hello and welcome to LQ from a fellow aussie!

Don't worry about your being new to linux- we all have to start from somewhere. Yes, even Linus Torvalds knew nothing about linux at some point.

You posted in the right place- you are asking about a LQ navegation problem. For future reference, the LQ member intro is located under general- as it is not related to question asking. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...splay.php?f=24

As I haven't registered in a while, I can't really help you with the other stuff that you are mentioning.

Just a quick tip to help you avoid frustration- treat linux as if you are learning a computer for the first time- don't try and think what Microsoft Windows would do. It's liberating, trust me. Just jump in and have a go- I would also reccomend the Linux Newbie Forum as it's the part of LQ dedicated to people just starting out- regular forum users are usually on their best behaviour in there.

Have fun! Oh, and thanks for flagging this issue- we like to make things easier for our users.

Thanks for the feedback Hamish Brunker. The intro sentence was linked directly to the intro forum until about two days ago. We were having a problem with many new members posting questions instead of intros in that forum, so as a stop gap measure the link was removed. We're still debating the best way to move forward on that. If you have any other specific examples of how the site layout/nav/whatever can be improved, do let us know.

We see that quite a bit, don't we jeremy- people being really desperate to post a question that they end up not posting in the right place, thus making it harder for them to get an answer.

no idea what we can do to fix it though. *shrug*.
