Spell Checker is back

There is once again a Spell Checker here at LinuxQuestions.org. I know a lot of you didn't miss it, but I think it was useful. It uses aspell and still needs a little testing. For now it is just available for new threads. If all goes well it will be added to replies and edits soon. If you notice any bugs let me know. Thanks.

I would just like to add a few things. Feedback is wanted on this. If you don't like it let me know. I'll fix it or scrap it all together if that is the consensus. Also, if you see a word that it doesn't recognize but should, let me know and I will add it. Thanks.

I didn't get any bug reports on this, so I am adding it to the rest of the site.

I didn't even notice it until I read this post. Actually it's a good idea, I am pretty good at figuring out what people are trying to say sometimes, but what I could really see helping is a grammatic checking program. I only remember one of those back in Word-Perfect I think, I think it was called grammatics?

And I see the spell check at the bottom of this, so I guess we can use it on replies now too. Cool

How about adding it to the quick reply form?

i would suggest that rather than adding it to that (it is a QUICK reply form and thus deliberately sparse), the spell checkerness be incorporated into a user profile? keep the spell check button where it is, but add a option on that page to automatically spell check on reply, so all future posts will instantly go through the checker... may as well get your moneys worth jeremy. Also the general way the spell checker seems to work is somewhat drawn out, surely rather than having to reinsert the text back into the reply it should just (or at least have the option to) directly reply.

I *may* add it to the quick reply, it seems not many people use it anyway. Having it do the actual posting would be much more resource intensive unfortunatelty. It was free (it's just a front end to aspell) so we are already getting our money out of it.

The site used to use spellchecker.net which stopped their free service. If we continued using that we would have had to pay. In the end not enough people used it to warrant paying. Aspell however is a free program. the spell checking now runs on the LQ server. It is a little slower and is fairly resource intensive, but it's free and I can add whatever words I want to it!
