Retain old status

I changed my login name and password for security reasons and lost my user status. Now I'm a "newbie". Is there any way regain my earlier status? Thanks.

Presumably this is a question about LQ and not Linux. As such, it shouldn't be in this forum (it'd be better off in WS&F). Anyway, no, status titles depend on your post count, so you'll only get back to what you were before when you make enough posts. The status titles don't really mean anything, though.

You should have asked Jeremy to change your username for you (although he will only do it if you have a very good reason for wanting it changed). This would have kept your post count and status intact.

And what security reason might that be? (changing login name)

I changed all my user names and passwords across the board. So it's too late to get back where I was I take it. Oh well.

The only way *any* computer system can 'recognize' a particular user is through the login ID. If you randomly registered a second time at LQ under a brand new name, there is no possible way to magically figure out that the new ID should somehow be linked to another existing ID.

If you wish to change your LQ nickname, please Email the site admin with a request to change it, including the reason why the change is being requested. To be honest though, an LQ'ers nickname is pretty much arbitrary in the first place, and what really matters is the content of one's posts, not the ID associated with those posts. Some of the best posts I've ever seen here at LQ have been written by people with the most baffling, confusing nicknames I've ever seen. Overall, the nick doesn't matter, the content does.

You couldn't have changed your username, as it's not a user accessible function. Additionally, at the number of posts you have, Newbie is the correct user title (the list in in the FAQ).

Have you tried logging in under your old nick?

Based on Jeremy's post, it's probably still there -- you may not have changed it, you may have simply created a new acct.
