replace distro-specific forums with distro thread tags
Remove the forums dedicated to certain distributions. Then move all those threads to the "general linux" forum with the tag of that distribution's name. Then make a way to strongly encourage tagging with the relevant distribution's name and version.
For example, when someone has a question about ubuntu wireless, they would post it in the "wireless" forum with the tag (or something like a tag) "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu 8.10". Then users could get answers relevant to their distribution(s) to show up at the top. Also, people could help in ways that they know a lot about.
It might be better to have a drop-down list in which users select their distro, and then a second one in which they select the version. This would make searching and tagging both easier.
I feel uncomfortable responding to this, because I'm not someone in authority, but I kind of like that idea.
