So it seems that the title 'moderator' does not necessarily apply to a certain thread. Unfortunately I think this can become rather confusing, and so I think that each 'moderator' should have the name of the thread that they have power over.
In that thread, Jeebizz, I edited my post and clarified a little for you, but further clarification:
Each forum (not thread) has an assigned mod(s) and the mods for each forum can be seen on the bottom of each main forum page. General, for example, has 6 mods who are able to perform such actions as closing a thread in General.
Besides this, we of course confer with each other if a particular situation warrants more input than that provided by only the mods of that forum.
That said, however, I do like your suggestion, but if I may, I'd suggest that maybe a pop-up when hovering over the moderator's username, or a little icon beside a moderators username (or maybe the word 'moderator' would be the link/pop-up) which when clicked would explain exactly what you are asking for, would provide the functionality you speak of, without the extra clutter in the sidebar (some mods work in multiple forums, so the sidebar list would be cluttery IMHO).
I do like the idea though, as it would address the confusion you encountered in that /General thread
A far better way would be for the mods of a particular forum to get a crown over their name. Something tasteful obviously, between a tiara and a coronet in size.
Kidding, I do agree that some way to identify whether the mod in a thread has powers in that thread or not would be useful - especially to me as I have often declared that I'm doing something to a thread only to realise that I'm outside my forum.

As a moderator is still a moderator even when they are in a forum they don't have mod powers in, we don't have any plans to implement something like this. Thanks for the feedback.

Perhaps a halo would be less gaudy...reserve horns for the hatchet-man mod, if you have one. Of course, it could be a hatchet-woman, too. I've encountered one of those in another forum, before I learned my netiquette, and they thought I might be a troll (this was not a Linux forum). Hauled me into a private room, she did, and did we ever have a chat. Straightened me right out.
Maybe mods could be the only ones with avatars? Hmmm...
I do not see why it matters which mod is over which forum, if I cuss (swear at) GrapefruiTgirl or XP loud in the newbie forum I am sure they will get the message and read the post.
This is true. We can issue verbal warnings in any forum, email warnings and can also issue infractions and the like whether we have powers over the thread at all.
To demonstrate, I will now ban Larry Webb from LQ forever, while being entirely unable to close this thread. Watch closely...
