Problem with yum

I've installed red hat linux 4 update 5 on my local machine.
Whenever i start to update my system using 'yum' the following error flashes on the terminal window:

There was a problem importing one of the Python modules
required to run yum. The error leading to this problem was:

No module named yum

Please install a package which provides this module, or
verify that the module is installed correctly.

It's possible that the above module doesn't match the
current version of Python, which is:
2.3.4 (#1, Jan 9 2007, 16:40:18)
[GCC 3.4.6 20060404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-3)]

If you cannot solve this problem yourself, please go to
the yum faq at:
http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumFaq

when i type "python" in the terminal window and subseqently "import rpm", the following error flashes:

[root@om-mum-lt-0012 ~]# python
Python 2.3.4 (#1, Jan 9 2007, 16:40:18)
[GCC 3.4.6 20060404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-3)] on linux2
Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information.
>>> import rpm
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<stdin>", line 1, in ?
ImportError: No module named rpm

Please Suggest
Regards
Saurabh Mehra

I suggest you post your thread once and in only one forum. Posting a single thread in the most relevant forum will make it easier for members to help you and will keep the discussion in one place. This thread should be closed because it is a duplicate.
