post count per thread

Hi,

I've not noticed this until today. The total post count doesn't mean that much to me. When was the change made to bump the count for every post? Even within a thread, the count bumps. I thought that the count only bumped for the first reply. After that nothing counted. Not complaining, just don't remember when this change was made. Plus never noticed my post count increasing within a thread.

Just curious.

It's always done that. There are a few forums where post count doesn't, erm, count at all such as General, but otherwise every post ups the number on your count.

I'm intrigued about why General was singled out for specific treatment.

Because the focus of LQ is technical and General is mostly non-technical. Before the change to Guru or Senior Member, some members were ready to hit Guru status (1000 posts) purely by means of posting in General. It was felt that this would devalue the efforts of others who hit 1000 by providing help in the technical areas. Also, General is supposed to be a 'just for fun' area and so it is easier to up the number of posts in that forum.

Otherwise, I could have the status of a LINUX GURU by now talking only about religion/politics, etc.

Notice onebuck, a few years back when I used to disagree with your views on some posts all I wanted to do was raise your post count. No thanks required.

Hi,

Thanks guys for the definition. I just remember that post bump per thread issue. I'm probably mixing the synapse pathway thus the confusion.

I never really pay any attention to the post count. It just bugged me to have someone indicate that I was posting to increase my counts. Far from that. I participate a lot here on LQ. More so since the Docs have be down for a while. Things are changing and to the positive.

Hey do not let anyone get to you. I can see where the post count has value at keeping people interested at veiwing and participating at LQ. I do not pay attention to mine anymore but must admit I did when I first started. It sounds like some may be jealous of your posts.

Hi,

Your right and I do have the intelligence to see through such people. It's just that some seem to think that labels mean something. I really don't care. I just want to give back to the community. My physical abilities, activities have been limited by the surgeons and my personal care physician. The laptop is around 5.5# so they can't restrict that.

What's been nice about this whole situation is the lose of 80#. Don't get me wrong I wasn't obese just bigger than my frame can handle. I feel a lot better but it would be nice to be able to pick up more than 35#. Try to take care of a farm with that restriction. Heck I had to repair a rail fence today because a mare got pi$$y. Ya, it costs a lot to replace a few rails. I managed by utilizing some mechanical advantage along with a little gray matter. Got it done! One of a few hundred and one to catch up.

I do appreciate your examples.

Thanks!

I think the best thing about the rankings here, is that you get to choose what your ranking is when you hit 5,000. It would be neat, to me, if you could do that with maybe a couple of other rankings to. This isn't a suggestion, and I'm sure it won't happen, I'm just pointing out that I think that is a neat feature.
Also, if anyone bothers people here, they may get post count, but they certainly won't be a moderator, so they would be depriving themselves of another boost in status, if that's what they're looking for.
