edit: And to clarify a little, a quote from the head honcho himself:

For every person that's posted asking about them, many more have thanked us for not allowing them. Avatars are just something you won't see at LQ. Sorry.

I'm also asking one of the mods to move this thread to the suggestions and feedback forum, with all the others about avatars...
Moved: This thread is more suitable in LQ Suggestions and Feedback and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.
Ok, have to admit that that's not very useful and highly based on personal taste.......
BTW: Avatars on LQ aren't completely 'banned'. For contributing Members it is possible to upload an avatar, but it's only shown in the Public Profile of those users. I personally like mine very much
i have noticed that sometime there are people changing their avartars within periods ... its not like there are(must be) complusive reasons for doing that , but people do know they can can use avartar for a sites ...
//plain lesser colors and smaller graphics will do , those spinning ones in the future ... ^_^
I guess that avatars would offer some sort of visual representation of the poster.
Pictures are easier to recognize than words, especially when similar names are involved.
For example, take the two hypothetical users Bill, and Biil. At a quick glance, one might not notice that these are two individual posters, but if one has an image of a tree next to his name, and the other has a kitten it is a lot easier to differentiate the two names because of the visual cue.
That's just off the top of my head, personally, I like that there are no avatars on the forums.
The only way I could (and this is me personally, not speaking as a mod) ever see avatars on here would be if there were strong limitations: 50x50 px, no animations, etc. and there was a profile option to switch off display of the avatars. This is important because of several reasons. If you are on dialup or a cell phone connection trying to fix your broadband, the avatars suddenly become nothing but annoying. If you are a business user and people have inappropriate avatars, your boss may not understand how important the text next to it is.
LinuxQuestions is intended to be a site of professionals with professional conduct. That's why we have the clean theme (see the number of questions that have been asked about themes), minimalist graphics (no inline images in posts, sigs, etc.) and a strong code of conduct regarding professionalism and appropriate language.

>> "I'm curious for my own personal enlightenment: Can anyone suggest a reason why avatars are useful?"
because we are using computers ... ??
.
I've been using computers for well over 20 years, and
never felt the urge to use an avatar. In fact, I find
them highly distractive (and most of the time repulsive)
and plain unnecessary. Waste of time, space and bandwidth. :}
