php code tags and page width


I did several searches in LQ Feedback and surprisingly found no other threads that match this problem, so I'm posting it here.

Unlike the regular code tags, the php code tags doesn't properly wrap or "contain" long lines. So we end up getting terrible side-scrolling. For example:

I believe this problem has been around for a long time. Is there any reason it hasn't been addressed yet?
