Just changed it in Firefox 3.5.2 to 'MyDistro' which wasn't recognized, hence the icon Unknown.

Deleted the option and now everyone can see again that I'm connected from work on a Windows XP machine.

Kind regards,

Eric

We do see that a lot, don't we?

I agree that in some cases there would be no reason to use a different PC to post their problem, but in others, there would be no choice. And in many of those cases, when considering the type of problem they're having, it may be obvious, and even more so when a Windows box is used.

(Coming out of shock, regaining common sense. )

Cheers

Yes, by default, browsers sends a number of pieces of information. That is why I like to refer people to this junkbusters page when they want to find out their IP address. In addition to finding out their IP address, they also find out a few other things they may not have known. In terms of such an "education," the only thing I see that page lacking is telling people where they are (presumably) located based on their IP address.

In terms of the discussion about using the user agent string and/or the listed distribution(s) in the profile for determining the OS the original poster (of a given thread) had the question about, I don't think either should be relied upon. That is why earlier in this thread I made the suggestion to get a little more aggresive in seeking this info when somebody starts a thread. In the relatively few posts I've made on LQ seeking help, I have certainly felt under no obligation to post the question from the machine/distro the question is about -- even if/when that is doable.

Thanks dragon.

OK, I'm officialy voting for this feature.

Now I wonder when will "they" decide and based on what. It's pretty clear by now what's the opinion of most of the interesting members about the topic; correct me if I'm wrong ( I haven't read all the posts, but it looks like that to me ).

And I hope when "they" will be deciding, that "they" will consider distribution list from http://distrowatch.com/.

And more thing, if this feature will be implemented then it should be available for all Linux distros, that would mean that this feature should be updated regulalry and that would mean that this feature shouldn't be made for few popular Linux distributions only.

Quite true... wouldn't be very useful, otherwise.

Cheers

At this point, who knows?

BTW- I just reactivated the feature, and noticed that it also showed which OS I was using earlier (but only on one post).

EDIT: and now it's not showing on this one....

Cheers

Yeah, I thought so, but it's Jeremy who used the word "we", so I had to use the word "they", Am I right or Am I right?

Dragon, I've also noticed some weird behavior of this feature, but I guess it's in alfa stage, so I guess that's understandable.

Actually, I think it's still in Gamma.

Just got back and noticed that after I edited my last post, the indicator appeared. But yes, I'm sure it's still very much in the 'testing' stage, regardless of which RAY you wish to name it.

Cheers

It appears that either Jeremy has achieved sentience or he's a member f the royal family.

I suspect that, on reflection, "we" means him and the people with an opinion on the subject.

That was my first guess.

BTW, after much consideration, I like the feature.

Cheers
