Well, I noticed that in my case, my browser string is simply "Linux", which is rather generic. I'd love to know what strings it's looking for to see if I can get a Debian Swirl

Now I'm trying it using the default for IceWeasel (oh how I love the user agent switcher plugin!)

I guess gaming the system this way kind of removes the point, doesn't it? Or is this actually even more to the point?

And as far as switching user agents is concerned, I run Privoxy so I can set it to report anything I want. I used to block user agents completely, but that broke a lot of sites. For a long time I reported myself as a Mac Classic with Mosaic, but that also broke sites.

So now I tell the truth.

If your distro is simply showing up as "Linux", do the following (and this applicable to FF 3+, by the way). Go to about:config and in the search box type in "useragent" (w/o the quotes). One of the options will have the identifier - in this case "Linux". Change that to your distro - Slackware, Debian, Mint, etc etc. You may need to play around with the wording to make it show up correctly.

I can confirm that Slackware, Debian, Gentoo and Ubuntu all show up correctly if you change the string to the single word for your distro.

This is going to lead to a great many useless posts for testing as more people catch on. Should there be one thread in General for this purpose?

Also, I noticed that editing a post does not change the user agent used for the original posting. I'm not sure how useful this might me, but I think it might be preferable to the current state where the original identification seems to be permanent.

This thread in General is a good place to post if you want to test you ruser agent. It won't affect post count and the original poster (thanks GrapefruiTgirl) has said that it's ok to post there.

Why in the other forums is the icon not always coming up? My icon hasn't shown up once in other forums, and a lot of other people's also. They're only occasionally showing up.
This is the first post I've made, as far as I know that has shown it.

It's probably because this is in beta and Jeremy is gauging the reactions and the viability of doing it forum wide. I think I have seen the icon in the General forum though.

Here's mine:
general.useragent.override;Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Debian; en-US; rv:1.9.1) Gecko/20090624 Firefox/3.5
And it shows up as:
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Debian; en-US; rv:1.9.1) Gecko/20090624 Firefox/3.5

However, I've tried Debian i686, I've tried setting the iceweasel settings, all sorts of things.

Must be something I'm missing?

Righty ho, I'm home now. So here's what you need to do:

Open a new tab and type in about:config (aboutconfig.png)
Type in useragent to the search box (useragent.png)
Select the line with the distro name, or where it should be (useragentselect.png)
Double click the name of the distro (useragentselected.png)

Once you have doubleclicked, a box opens (useragentselected.png)
The space to write your distro name is inside the brackets. NOTE: Leave the brackets intact (changeinsidethebrackets.png)

Once done, your distro will produce an icon.

Acceptable strings are Debian, Slackware, Gentoo, Mint (I think), Ubuntu. Not tried any others and I think for MS products you do Windows_xp_2003 or Windows_Vista - but I could be wrong.
