New (sub)forum: Free (libre) Games

Hi.

I just browsed through the games forum, and something struck me: most (or all) of the game titles mentioned in the thread titles are non-free. While some people don't mind, I do. And I'm quite convinced that I'm not alone.

That's why I suggest a subforum of games: free (libre) games--specifically for discussion matters related to games that are free software.

I'm quite sure it wouldn't generate `thread-collisions' w. Games (since (seemingly) most of the talk in Games is about non-free games), and that it would draw enough traffic (because n people can't be wrong).

In any case, *I*'d like to see that.

hmm.... an interesting thought- but yeah- I dunno if the site admin would appreciate more complicated forum-ness. Umm... I agree about the non-free (gratis and libre) stuff... but then again- would you remove questions about dual booting, makeing word work in wine, etc etc?

At this time I don't think their is sufficient traffic to break the games forum up into multiple sub-forums. Discussion of Libre games would certainly be on topic and welcome in the current Games forum though.

No, and I don't think it follows from anything I said.

I understand the thinking pattern -- "why make libre a special case *only* for games?" I'll explain that in a hopefully convincing way.

Games differ from non-games (i.e. browsers, spreadsheets, compilers -- programs that `gets a job done') in that most non-free non-games have a free replacement/alternative that's *just as good*.

Games don't have that--or if they do, then please, *please*, show me a free RPG about as good as Diablo II, an RTS about as good as Warcraft III and an FPS about as good as Counter-strike (or AVP 2) (considering graphics, music, sound effects, gameplay, story, ...; consider it OK if the sum is about as good, even though some parts are sub-par).

Which is why most people run non-free games: the free games just don't `cut it'. And hence, the games forum drown in talks about non-free games (and accessories, like Cedega (it's non-free, right?)).

So, even though `libre gamers' like me are welcome in Games, we would probably drown out in the `noise'.

*That* is why I propose(d) a seperate forum for libre games.

Note also that I didn't suggest anything about removing anything from Games as it is.

---

In any case, since it won't be made here, does anyone know of such a forum elsewhere?

In any case, thanks.
