The wiki is going good. I'd just like to say that since morning(Monday) I cannot view the Commands page
http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/Commands As this is the first time I am participating in adding content to any wiki, I don't know a few things. How do I create a new page and make a link to it? Thanks. |
Never mind. I found out <sheepish smile> Should have searched on the wiki site first.

Jeremy - have just noticed that we currently don't have working page links to:
stub plunge forward help it grow using the typical linking method in the WIki - have just tried to link to each of the above but they currently all refer to the same page URL name ending - ie "LinuxQuestions" |
Skyline,
As those pages are part of the manual they are not part of the default namespace, but the LinuxQuestions.org_Wiki namespace. To find out how to link to them you can look at one of the current links, but I'll add a little note about namespaces to the help section. --jeremy |
Thanks for clarifying - just worked out how to do it: for anyone whose interested: - to link to the stub article/disclaimer.
stub Just pipe the last part of the page address through the stub name. I'll put a note in the WIki markup help section. (I've put it here - click below) http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/...rg:Wiki_markup |
Actually - piecing the whole stub disclaimer together we have:
This article is a stub and needs to be finished. plunge forward and help it grow! which with the markup becomes: This article is a stub and needs to be finished. plunge forward and Help it grow ! |
Eventually we will have our own markup page, but for now it's a bit bare:

Jeremy - would it be of any use to put the full markup for the stub disclaimer in the main (bare) wiki markup page temporarily or just put it in the user contributed page (I've put a brief description in the user contributed page for now - can expand on this in the user contrib. page if it isnt neccesary in the main page)
Another question - whilst going through the weeding process, if there are 2 instances of KDE in an article for example do we just link up to the first instance and leave any further instances as normal text? |
I don't think the stub disclaimer is necessary as I plan on completing the wiki markup document at some point. For now the article it references is *very* complete ;) As for the second question, you should only link the first instance of the word. Thanks Skyline.

No probs Jer. - another idea - something that might be of use would be a "weeding script" - one task it could perform would be to:
For every recognised link such as: OpenOffice, KDE, Kernel etc etc etc etc the script would search through every page in the Wiki for first instances of unlinked text per page which match the top level link (and the page not already having a relevant link on it) One could then either get the script to: automatically change the first instance of matched text per page into a link, or atleast flag those pages up for further scrutiny to see whether its appropriate to create a link from that page. Any thoughts. |
I don't anticipate a need for this, but as we get going if the need arises we can look into it.

On the main page in the sidebar, under 'Edit', there is an 'Editing Help' link that points to 'How_does_one_edit_a_page'. Shouldn't it instead point to 'How_to_edit_a_page'?
|
Thanks aaa - it's been updated.

Also, the bullets look very different in IE
** looks like one dot instead of two * is just an indent This flips things around. Can anything be done? Edit: I fixed it. |
Every now and again I find that the wiki site stops working. I mean, I open it, add content, make changes and go on. But after some time, suppose I am on the main page, no matter on which link I click, the page does not open.
The error is Operation Timed Out. Nothing wrong with my internet connection as I can browse the net easily. |
