New LinuxQuestions.org Site - The LQ Wiki

I am happy to announce that a new LQ site is now entering public beta. The LQ Wiki aims to be a collaboratively-edited repository for all things Linux. Please bear with us as we clean things up and finalize the help section, but feel free to start making edits and additions now. Note that as this is a separate site, your forum login info will not work. All content entered into the wiki is available under the terms of a Creative Commons license, so the content will remain free to use for all. Please post all feedback, comments and suggestions in this thread. I'd like to thank david_ross who put a ton of work into getting the wiki up and running (and looking good) and trickykid for doing the logo.

...now off to the wiki!

What are the rules for adding content?

Peacedog 02-20-2004 06:07 PM

that's great i just registered. thx to all involved. not to be an echo, but, as aaa stated are there any rules? i don't see any posted. i'd also like to offer my services for any future endeavor concerning graphics. (although i don't believe trickykid's logo could be improved, just to get that straight.) i do graphics work, from pencil drawings on paper to technical drafting to computer graphics. just consider me a volunteer in that arena. i would love to contribute to what i consider my "home on the net". thx again to all involved, for your hard work.

http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/....org_Wiki:Help has some of the basics and the style guideline etc. are still being worked out. Please feel free to add as much info as you'd like to the wiki - the few page that you shouldn't edit won't let you edit them anyway ;)

Hi Jeremy/Mods/members - I 've just added about 20 distributions to the WIKI Distribution section - (kept to the popular ones) - a question:

In addition to the current alphabetical distro listing it might be an idea to have a categorized distribution link/(s) at the top so people can quickly home in on a particular type of distro for example

Live CD's

Firewall distributions

Majors

etc etc etc

This would enable two general approaches to finding out about distros:

1) - If you know the name of the distribution in advance, you can peruse the alphabetical listing by letter, find it and click

2) - however - if you specifically want to find out about a certain category of distribution ie Live cd's or Firewall distros etc etc etc, you can click straight to that category, rather than having to sift through a long alphabetical listing and never knowing the full plethora of distributions within that category.

What do you think?

Clicking on a category link like Live CD's or Firewall distros would bring you to another page with a general description of what that category of distribution typically does and then below it, the list of distribution links proper for that category.

Just a note that the slowness in the wiki (and also in the forums) due to timeouts has been resolved. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Skyline, the great thing about the wiki is that anyone can add content. If you'd like a "categorized distribution" page, you can link to it from the distro page and start building it.

Hi Jeremy.

I just added a few commands. Could you please enlighten me as to what the Talk feature is.

Too sad I can not put more there for some hours :( 'cause I have two exams tomorrow.

LinuxLala 02-21-2004 05:32 AM

hey Trickykid, that logo is awesome man...

jeremy 02-21-2004 10:48 AM

The "discuss this page" talk if for discussion about the contents of its associated "subject" page. The user talk page can be used for the occasional personal (but public) communication among users. I'll add this to the help section also.
