New LinuxQuestions.org Forum - Other *NIX

By popular request, you can now discuss your HP-UX, IRIX, Darwin, Tru64, OS X and other UNIX platform related questions here at LinuxQuestions.org. The Other *NIX forum will compliment the *BSD, Solaris and AIX forums that we already had.

nice addition, i think now LQ.org now covers most if not all areas now ;)
now other than new distros joining up, and adding in their fourm, i think
your good to go now when it comes to fourm selection when people
need to post :p

OS X being a BSD derivative, it can be taken under the *BSD Forum folds. Just my .02c

but yet BSD,AIX, and Solaris can be put under the Other *NIX fourm ;)
its just like people posted their mandrake, or slackware, etc questions
in Linux - Newie or General ...
the point of the matter is, alll he is trying to say is that anything
NIX related (whether a fourm exists or not) can fall under this category ..
and that would be my .4c :p

ppuru,

I guess strictly speaking OS X questions could be asked in *BSD, but I'd say that while OS X is based on BSD I'd be hesitant to actually call it BSD.

Why is that jeremy? Mac OS X is based on FreeBSD after all. Right?

jeremy 09-13-2004 06:39 PM

I'm not a Apple guy, but I thought it was based on Darwin (which is based on a BSD variant).

Yes, Darwin is based on FreeBSD, Mac OS X is Darwin, and it uses the Mach 0 kernel too. Not exactly your average every day version of FreeBSD.

Cool, I can now ask my SCO questions, which is why I originally started the thread about creating a forum such as this! Thank you!

(No, I don't like SCO, but the database software that I use at work's company insists on using it and will not support any other OS.)
