Question Need to know.

I have been unable to find information about whether you have a "linux amature radio" section. I am trying to find a forum where I can ask questions about setting up amature packet radio using a linux computer. There are several programs needed like APRS and PAKET (both win/dos programs) and how to connect to a mfj 1270c TNC. These will be used for emergency communications so I have to get it right. The operating system will be Slackware 10.02. If you don't have a forum here but know of one I would greatly appreciate a reply with a URL.

Thank you.

how have you been unable to find info? either there is a forum listed here or there isn't... http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/index.php

but no, there's nothing specifically tailored towards that at LQ.org, but that doesn't mean people mightn't be able to help anyway

OK. So my statement was not entirely correct. Did your reply have to be so arrogant? Sorry! This is why I HATE to use forums. I receive updates from the moderators of linuxquestions all the time and I "THOUGHT" I had received one telling of a new forum for amateur radio people using linux. MY MISTAKE! I thought I had overlooked it somehow.

No, I'll pass. I need to find an amateur radio using linux forum because most amateur radio people are courteous and speak kindly. Here I would end up getting mad and not get the information I needed anyway. So, thanks a lot.

Maintech, I'm not sure you'll find an entire forum dedicated to that topic as it's a bit of a niche, but I would encourage you to at least attempt to use LQ for your needs. With over 200,000 members there's surely a few here that have already done what you're trying to do. Also, I think you'll find the members and help extremely friendly and courteous here - it's something we pride ourself on.

remember that facial expresions aren't transfered easily down phone lines.

I believe that you are remembering announcements about the online radio and podcast

I would suggest the linux-hardware or the linux-general sub forums for a question like that.

Thank you all

I thank you all for your speedy and friendly response. I am sorry if I missunderstood you acid_kewpie. What few times I have used a forum the experience has not been rewarding.

Perhaps what do you think could make forums better then? Not to nitpick but maybe the overall experience would be better if you didn't assume people were arrogant when they clearly were not. Or when you REPLY after an hour of your original question with an attitude asking why no one has helped you yet?

Sorry, I have a good memory but I'm sitting here reading this thread wondering why your experience can be so bad but from the looks of it at least on this forum, it's been your own attitude that made the overall experience not so good.

So what could this forum do to improve itself? Remember, all the members here are helping members like you for free in their own spare free time. Don't judge individual forums by what other forums might have done as well. If that was the case, I'd never read another book again cause I've read some awful books but didn't judge others by my past experiences..

So don't take this post of mine defensively, I'm just curious in why you think your experience has been bad and what can LQ do to improve it for you?

This is why I hate forums. And if you will look I have not been back 1 hour after my original question.

So what are you trying to tell me? You have been back over some posts I made here in the past? Is that what you were referring to in the above quotes? For a moderator you seem to have lots of "passion" but little true help.

Of course not. Why would anyone take the things you posted out of context? You informed me that I was entirely wrong in how I read a previous post. You informed me that I was the ignorant person for having an attitude because no one helped me within 1 hour after post (I have no idea about that one unless sometime in the past when I was in a job related panic I did this thing). And that it is my attitude that makes me have a bad experience in forums like this one. Are there any other criticism's you would like to add? My typing skills? Maybe my spelling? Maybe you need to go read some more of my posts and critique them also and find some more things I am lacking in. I am so pleased you have found so many things I am wrong in and you did it so quickly. Also, I am sure my reply here will garner more praises from you about my attitude. No. You above all others have convinced me that this is one forum I really don't need to try to use. This will be my last post. I am truly sorry that I have inconvenienced you and displayed such a bad attitude. My sincere apologies.

See, this is the type of response I get when all I am trying to find out is why you've claimed to have such bad experiences. I'm asking you these questions and yes I do remember you from a past issue I pointed out to try and find out how we can actually improve this site. But instead you have yet again responded in a negative way yourself.

I'm not trying to start a fight on who's right or wrong, but judging by your own reactions to responses or no responses even, I think the problem is not entirely the forums themselves. Giving attitude, you should only expect attitude back.

I did in fact read most of your other posts here, most seem to be normal everyday posts from any member. Why I'm curious is why the attitude to other members or the site itself? The post I pointed out was a good example, you did in fact respond within an hour moaning and complaining cause no one had replied, also your title was blaming a moderator for some unknown reason which makes our moderators look bad when it ended up not even being our own moderator on this very forum that gave you the supposed bad advice.

Perhaps you should rethink some of your own responses when the members here are only trying to help 99% of the time. When you reply like you did in the post I pointed out, what do you expect from members with their first reactions? It's like getting blamed for something we didn't even do.

Regards,

A curious Moderator who is trying to find out how we can improve our own site from members like you that claim forums basically suck.

Well I can't speak for the rest of the Linuxquestion community, but trickykid has given me a lot of help since I moved to linux. Tons of people here have, this is one of the better forums out there.

Why don't you drop this argument as it isn't going to go anywhere. Move on and get your box setup again to how you need it. Next time you have a question, come here and ask it. Keep in mind that everybody here is here on a volunteer basis and wait for a reply. Take the reply and check it. Make sure it looks like it'll work and then give it a go. Oh, and don't forget to <--
