Musical Linux

Hi,

Some of us were dreaming out loud...would a subforum for Linux and music be an option?
Where musically minded Linux users could exchange ideas, patches, their (own/legally made) music (perhaps as link to somewhere) and above all help in need...

So, maybe a suggestion?

Thinking out loud...weekend only a few hours away...

I like the idea. But then you'd need(?) to create one for video and graphics. Perhaps, one generic section with 3 subforums (audio, video, graphics?) Just a thought.

That is a good idea, as fan of music and art i totaly agree, that would be a great asset to the forum.

Regards

Thanks for the support, gang! :)

We appreciate this.

So, who's gonna ask Jeremy?? :D

You have already asked Jeremy by starting this thread. Hopefully, Jeremy visits LQ from time to time. Lol

I think a general Linux Multimedia forum should suffice. Breaking it down into multiple subforums would just leave each one underpopulated, I think.

Good point. Let's see what the boss will say;)

Thanks for the feedback. As many Linux multimedia issues can contain both software and hardware aspects, it's possible we'd be open to the idea. One concern I'd have is that there is not enough demand for a dedicated top level forum for this. Thoughts on this?

Indeed - I read each and every thread in the LQS&F forum (and respond to most).

It would be a great idea IMO, as I've always found audio/sound on Linux quite confusing because of the many different implementations available.

Hmm, how about a sub station somewhere under Linux General? Does'nt have to be a top-level at all. A sub level should do nicely.
Some place to put questions about sound (OSS, ALSA,...) in general, things like "how do I make that sound with this program?" or even "anyone needs a drummer?" - maybe a hotspot for all creative streams on music using Linux as backbone.
Especially a "please critique" type of undercurrent...
Helping new users get to grip with things like Ardour, multi-track recording and even publishing stuff...why not?

Hey, great way to start the weekend! ;)

Personally, I'd stick to technical things. All the stuff like "anyone needs a drummer" or "critique" would, IMHO, belong to Non-*NIX Forums/General.

Good point...but, since that kind of threads/questions will come peaking around the corner anyway, maybe setting this thing under Non-*NIX Forums/General is a better option...

A lot of good thinking here if I may say.

To say something based on replies so far and not, it should be top level forum Linux - Multimedia. I agree with Cultist, no need for sub-forums.

If I may quote Wikipedia;
Quote:

Multimedia includes a combination of text, audio, still images, animation, video, or interactivity content forms.
Multimedia is usually recorded and played, displayed or accessed by information content processing devices, such as computerized and electronic devices, but can also be part of a live performance. Multimedia (as an adjective) also describes electronic media devices used to store and experience multimedia content.
Root have said;

Well, there's one lovely thread in General about music, it has almost 35,000 views and more than 1000 replies, I'd say that's 36,000 reasons enough for Multimedia forum. That could be a place where all artistic souls could meet and believe me they would have a lot to talk about.

LQ is missing Multimedia forum.

I tend to agree with alan_ri. Persons frequently ask technical questions about Linux media players and those posts are scattered amount newbie, distro, and software forums.

I think a technical forum for those questions would provide a service.
