MS Banner Ad on LQ?!?!?!

Funny thing happened when I logged on tonight... I saw a banner ad for WinXP hyping Media Player 9. Here! Am I the only one that thinks this is somehow out of place?

KnightAbel 11-05-2002 12:25 AM

haven't seen it... but I would agree... however, they can't help some of the banners, I would think that they participate in a click/link exchange.

There was a thread on this a while ago, Jeremy doesn't put the ads up on here himself, whoever he is hosted with does, i'm sure if Jeremy had a choice he wouldn't have em :p but hey, if you click on it, just think that microsoft is helping the open source community :D

Cheers

I believe the ads are rotated and generated thru burstnet, so most of the time Jeremy doesn't have any control over what ads are placed, but if he see's one that he doesn't like, he can have it removed and never shown again.

If you ever see a banner ad that pops up a new window, please report it as he has instructed they never have those types here. This is a popup-free ad site.

I doubt you'll ever see a RedHat ad on the Microsoft website but that site isn't setup like that MS pays for it here we are all volunteers trying to learn & sharing what we have learned. It does seem a little bit odd that there would be a MS ad here but hey if it helps to pay the bills & keeps this site open then I will accept that. This site is great & I really like the idea of NO POPUPS OR POPUNDER ads I don't mind the banner ads but the popups annoy me.

I see no ads...
Every page i open on LQ shows no ads, and continues to load for 3 mins, after which i get a error such as "timeout connecting to server burstnet.com"
Heh, i guess im just lucky, i can't connect to the ad exchange site :D
But then there are a couple of other sites i cant connect to as well. someones knows if this is my ISP's problem, or something i screw up, BTW it doesnt work in windos either, so its not a firewall issue...

If it's happening in windows & Linux I'd say it's your ISP, the way I see it is if it dosent work in windows OR linux, it just dosent work:(
Get a phone number for a free ISP and dial into that and see can you access something you couldnt from your normal ISP, if you do that you will know exactly what the problem is.
It's a good thing your getting blocked from ads, but getting blocked from other things:mad: Hope that helps:)

actually, I have never seen an ad here either. I wonder why?

Mephisto 11-05-2002 07:23 PM

I had to jump around a bit but I don't see any ads either. Except maybe the front page, but that was a banner ad for LinuxQuestions. Never gave it any thought. I use mozilla, might that make a difference?

jeremy 11-05-2002 07:45 PM

I use mozilla and see the ads regularly. If I see an MS ad (or any ad I don't like) I'll usually login and remove it. This does mean you may see it for a day or so. I auto reject all popups, popunders, flashing banners and those warning message ads (although a few of the later seem to make it though now and again).

so why do I never see any ads then? o.O

Mephisto 11-05-2002 08:25 PM

Ironically I am now getting the ads. Odd.

MasterC 11-06-2002 12:26 AM

I don't get the ads :D I have the box in my user cp checked to not see then since I have the choice (as a contributing member) ;) Actually, sometimes when I am at work I'll change that setting to see the ads, so I can click on some for the site, but at home I like to surf like this, makes things much faster.

Cool
