I'm not sure I favor removing what has been removed but, if it is going to be, let's do a thorough job of it.
Fixed.

I don't think "Disabled" really has a negative connotation and it's not even possible for us to disable it punitively, so I wouldn't worry too much about this.

I get that people would then need to trim quotes if it got unnecessarily nested but then others could down-rep them if they don't. Or maybe provide options for 'quote' and 'full quote'.
I think what have have makes sense for the majority of use cases. It's possible we'll change it at some point, but we have no plans to do so at this time. if it's something you'd like to get feedback from other members on, you should post a dedicated thread.

Well, a new user wouldn't know that it wasn't possible and it sounds negative to me, but I guess it's not that big a deal.

Okay - it'll probably end up being just me, but I'll see.

Yeah, I realized that as soon as I temporarily flipped my rep back on to see something.

Those that opted-out can still receive and give pos/neg rep. The only difference at this point is what is publicly shown and what is not shown. I opted-out and am the only one, although I assume Jeremy can as well, that can see/check my rep (all info is still available in the LQ UserCP). I can also see/follow what happens to those that did not opt-out.

The reason why those that opted-out are so active in this thread is probably because they have strong feelings about it.

My point was that with all the misunderstanding, the fluid nature of the changes being made, and the repeated responses by Jeremy saying "we did that 2 days ago." that rather than opting out prior to finalization, it might be a good idea to see how it's actually being used. I have no problem with any choice anyone makes regarding opting out, I just think that it's early for that.

As for brianL's concerns about people like Eric and Robby's reputations, with the inclusion of the thanks system it's come up quite a bit. I think it's worth mentioning that this is an LQ reputation and not a Slackware reputation system. Eric, Robby, Pat, mRgOblin, et al have reputations that precede them. I had heard of AlienBOB before I even started using Slackware. I could see a special reputation addition for people in the "contributor" class of membership, as a matter of fact I think it is a very good idea now that I think of it. But those guys have more important things to do than hang out at LQ all day so their thanks counts were always lower than trolls like brianL and I! They also don't have the term guru. Just "Slackware Contributor"

So how about it Jeremy. Special reputation boost for distro contributors?

I totally agree with this position. But, their (Slackware team) rep level is already high in my book. Either Slackware or anything else they surpass when involved.

Definitely. But not to sound like the Slackware mafia (as sometimes happens here at LQ) I think it should be stated explicitly that any distro's contributors that take time to help here at LQ definitely deserve the rep up. One of my favorite things about my distro of choice (trying not to sound like a fanboy here) is interaction with the people actually contributing builds, etc. and the chance to help out in my meager way especially since it's here at LQ which is the most helpful forum google ever stumbled me into.

I've decided to opt in again. The status and reputation of the 1337 Slackers should be obvious to everyone, but some people wouldn't recognise the obvious if it came up and slapped them in the face.
EDIT
(should that be 1337 514XX0r5?)

I don't understand this. When I click on "My Profile" in the menu the new page will show me just a green dot with the quickinfo how many rep points I have. Nothing else? Or do you mean data which are dislpayed in the leftmost column of a post? I see still no changes...

<edit> Oh, I probably haven't got any repping (yet?) possibly that's why there is nothing to show. Kindly disregard this post . </edit>

Thanks anishakaul I clicked on "Statistics" and go a list / menu with a subsection "Heplful Posts". I guess that's what is meant but it is not really what Jeremy described in his posting. Ah, well ... oh yes, and see the <edit> section in my above post .

Ok, clear.

To re-assure you: I do participate in testing the options/layout/etc.

I regularly turn the reputation system back on to see what has changed and to get an up-to-date feel. But I am against this reputation system (I explained why in post #559) and will permanently opt-out whatever happens.

Participating in LQ should be fun and it started to look like that the fun part is/was being overshadowed by (among other things) the way this reputation system was implemented. With the opt-out changes that Jeremy implemented over the last 24/36 hours this changed in a positive way.

I won't make any final decisions about my presence at LQ until the rep system has been fully rolled out and the only way I can make a fair decisions is by testing, keeping up-to-date with the "tuning" and by participating as usual (while opted-out).

There is a ">>" sign. *Sigh* clicking on that "Reputation" moves in from the right ... thanks for your patience and help, anishakaul.

I opted out.

The whole thing doesn't feel right. It is unjust and what is worse, it is intransparent. Anybody who likes it should feel free to carry on of course.

I'll leave my appreciation of any help I might get directly in the actual thread and for everybody open to read right there then like I did already up until now.

You did??

I still see a green dot and a rep number, looks like you did not yet opt-out

BTW: No bug, I viewed it with and without being opted out myself. Same result.
