@jens: Which browser are you using and are the settings correct?

I've seen a comment by Jeremy, somewhere in this long thread that browser settings could be the reason for it.

It didn't work before I posted that question.

We've been considering adding the ability to limit the rep system on a per forum basis, so I'd be interested in any feedback people may have on this.

FWIW, a member does not need to make a post (or do anything specific) after the system was introduced for this to work.

Why do you not get any points whatsoever when a newbie with a handful of posts and no rep yet clicks on the rep icon? Wouldn't it be more fair to make that 1 point?

Most people that come to LQ are short stayers and will probably get no rep. If those people are thankful enough to find and click on the rep icon, wouldn't it be fair to the one clicking the rep icon _and_ the one that spend some time answering them to get at least 1 point if they did so?

Look at this thread: missing separator error I took the time to help, the OP was happy in the end. He clicked on the rep icon and took the time to enter something (wish i could give you 10). End result: not one point extra. Probably not what the OP expected.

Don't get me wrong, I opted out of this rep system and I personally don't care if I get -10, 0 or +10 points if someone clicks on the rep icon, but I do think it is unfair for those that do want to use this system.....

A line has to be drawn somewhere, and at this time the line is that you need to have been repped once for you to start giving out rep. As you can see, that member was still able to use the system and give you positive feedback, it's just that their rep power was 0, so 0 points were added. It's possible we'll adjust this in the future based on feedback, but it seems to be a fairly good trade-off I think.

Sorry, I don't agree.

At this moment I do look at the LQ UserCP page, but that is only so due to the testing of and following this new rep system. I'm not for it, but I do believe I can add to it by suggesting improvements. From the moment it is fully rolled out, or I don't care any more about this feature I will not look at the LQ UserCP (I hardly ever did before, no info there that I'm interested in).

That makes this: irrelevant for those that opt-out.

The above is seen from the one that answers, seen from the OP's side it seems that s/he expects something to happen when s/he pushes that icon. I do wonder what would happen if s/he knows that this "thank you" is mentioned only there and/or the fact that not one point is given. Maybe s/he would have posted a more personal thank you message? (Which I prefer above every system).

I don't like this idea. Why would we "rep" each other? Some people will have low reputation and will be sad about it. To my opinion - it's just an inconvenience.

Exactly. Why? Speaking personally, all that I've ever wanted is that if I give a questioner the right solution to a problem is a simple reply: "That worked", and maybe "Thanks".

FYI the most newbies I help are the actual newbies !

Since most of them are here to ask imperfect questions only it is very likely that they would not get the reput points soon.

I spend nearly 10 minutes on giving them directions which they often find to be helpful !!

Feel good factor is important for me to be more helpful and on NOT getting cookies for being helpful I will really find it difficult to continue as before!

I had mentioned this in my previous post # 340 which you choose not to respond to !

anishakaul, we have no plans to implement that feature at this time, but we'll keep it in mind as a future enhancement.

I too frequent the newbies forum the most, trying to help out where I can. Although the new members don't have the ability to award reputation points, if they press the 'Yes' option for finding the post helpful, it does show up in your UserCP. I think this adds to the feel good factor, knowing that you've been thanked in a way although without receiving 'points'.

I've got some of those 'clicks' and to me they have the same value as any other way of saying thanks.
