I like 273 idea !!
How about a poll of which OS was on the hardware people are using when they bought it? I can think of the following options but there may be others:
Windows
Linux
None
Built machine yourself
Mac OS
Add because i have not bought a total new comp since 386sx[supposed to be 386DX ]
and my clawhammer was new MB & mem & chip , but recycled everything else .
...(snip)
my example , 1f,1cf,1caf,7caf,7baf i have more then 1 comp
===================
Let me add some thoughts to maybe help with the design of the choices:
first computer I put linux on was actually pulled from the trash can in the hall at work.
I don't think the company had had computers for 5 years previous to my arrival.
The OS on the machine was MSDOS (!)
First brand of Linux was Yiggrasil. (probably spelled wrong)
Then Slackware and have been using Slackware since.
My current two most used machines are 10 and 5+ years old respectively.
I bought them new and the newer one is Linux/MSDOS/WINE only. The older is Linux/Window$
--because some, at work, specialty programs are not available on Linux or Wine.
About a month ago, I went to get a new machine and could not find better hardware
than what I am currently using. Machines in the stores today seem to be for fluff heads only.
The choices list should somehow account for such circumstances as I strongly feel that
I am not the only person acting as such or similar.
Yes - I too am interested in the various actions that have lead one to using Linux
--and towards what goals.
I have long thought we who use Linux are closer in motives than we think.

saved from trash
thanks Norseman01 , , thats why i had c] c. saved/recycled/repaired comp
lol, i did actually have "saved from trash " cause at one time i had 10 pentium 1,s pulled from the garbage and tried all the small linuxs on , but i had to repair them , so they were saved .
I am A+ certified and they were great practice !
32 bit vs 64 bit OS?
Would be nice to know what's the ratio, how many in your environment are 32 bit or 64 bit?
Mine are 100% 64 bit.
1 desktop 32-bit LXLE 12 Revisited
2 laptops 32-bit LXLE 12 Revisited
1 desktop with 2 64-bit Linux Distros, LXLE 14 and Ubuntu Studio (whatever the latest version number is, I forget)
The desktop with 2 64-bit Linux Distros also has Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit installed, so I can choose one of three operating systems at boot, just depending on what I am working on.
How about do you find Linux less, more or the same maintenance/skill level as using Windows or OSX? My pre-vote is less skill/maintenance required. Maybe throw TCO in the question too?
Just an idea I had while adding a hard drive to my computer...
What about a poll for what filesystem you use? Ext2,3,4, fat, ntfs, reiserfs, btrfs, ...
You might want to have seperate polls for hard drives and flash drives. (And maybe SSDs)

Having just learned that Google dumped ext4 support in Chrome OS this is a timely question for me.
[sorry this is a hijack]I had hoped that Google would support free filesystems, at least in order to get them out of paying MS for EXFAT, but it seems they want to pay MS and hold free software in contempt.

I have a Chromebook through my high school... do we lose support in the next update? I haven't touched it all weekend...
I'll admit, I was very surprised (but happy) when I plugged my flash drive in for the first time and it mounted both partitions.

Thanks for the feedback, this will likely be our next poll.
