LQ May be Headed to LinuxWorld UK

The possibility of LQ attending LinuxWorld UK has gotten one step closer to becoming a reality. We will find out for sure on September 1st, but all signs now point to it being possible. The single remaining issue at that point will become funding. The trip to LWE UK will be considerable more costly then the trips within the USA. For that reason, all donations and contributing member funds received between now and the show on October 6th will go to help fund our trip. Any and all help is really appreciated. We have a large UK following, and it will be great to be able to meet some of our UK members. If you have any questions, feel free to post. Thanks.

Glad to help, why should we in the US get to have all the fun? :)

george314 08-23-2004 09:45 PM

Well, well well...
I must say, that the faithful have their way of winning.
I have too many college loans to send in money, but I will send a warm message.

An airplane ticket doesn't cost all that much. IF the dudes at Linuxquestions don't fund your trip, why don't you ask Redhat Corporation? They seem to be doing rather well, by pulling their mainstream product off the nerd shelf.

So, I see no problem you making the trip. As far as we are concerned, we are doing more than our two cents worth, by helping you debug Fedora.

George

P.S: Nothing personal, but Microhat is not my way of doing work. Slackware forever!

jeremy 08-23-2004 09:56 PM

george314, you seem a bit confused. Redhat is in no way affiliated with LQ, so I can't imagine they'd pay for me to go. If you know something I don't though, speak up ;) As far as "the dudes at Linuxquestions" funding the trip, I *am* the dude - ie. I pay all the bills for the site. The plane ticket is quite a bit more then I expected (about 1200-1300USD it would seem for the week of LWE UK) and we have already exhibited in New York and San Francisco. Running LQ is not cheap, as you may imagine, so I am hoping some members can kick in a little cash to help offset some of the cost. For those members who don't have the cash - as always, your participation is valued above all else, so please don't feel like you have to give.

Thanks,

Jeremy, I'm sorry for my confusion. For the longest time I thought that Fedora funded this site.
Oops. Big oops.

As far as trippin' I wish you best of luck.

George

P.S: By the way, THANKS FOR MAINTAINING THIS SITE
I must say that many of my linux curiosity has been
soothed by the wisdom of fellow linux users like you.

P.S: If you were in Atlanta, then I would do my best to drop
in a visit. There is a good bit of Linuxism going on there,
since Georgia Tech nerds have problems getting
dates on weekends.

Now that's funny.. if we had Redhat funding us, I wouldn't have to go to work everyday to get paid but instead keep doing what I do here... and that would rock if I didn't have to buy 400 dollar or more airplane tickets just to make it to LWE each time.. and no, LWE UK wouldn't be hundreds of dollars.. probably more like $1200... not including hotel, cab, food and other expenses.. ;)

A big thanks to those who contribute to help this site grow.. and I'll be suprised if any of us Americans make it to the UK Expo.. maybe another year for me, but I will be in Boston most likely.

Cheers.

Just a heads up for anyone thinking of going to the UK expo - I suggest you register this week so you can get in for free. Next week it will cost you 15GBP:

jeremy 08-24-2004 08:22 AM

george314, no problem. A couple mods are actually in the ATL area, BTW. For LWE UK, the turnout for LQ looks to be quite good as a bunch of our mods are in or around the UK. Thanks for the heads up on registering david_ross.

David_Ross: you managed to let me know ahead of the email I received at work :) LQ should start claiming some speed records :D

george314 08-25-2004 09:59 AM

guys, I really hope you make it to London
there is so much hot a$$ there...

as far as money...
Damn, we linux bastards are a fickle bunch. We install for source, and then don't pay for
any of this shit.

tricky is what tricky does

linux lovers

all ya linux lovers out there
I have $20,000 worth of college debt, and I donated $25 to
the London trip

If you want to help out with this cause, you may be in a better
position to donate cash. It takes just a couple of minutes.

I'm just grateful to the guys who maintain this site, that
I was able to avoid lot's of frustration...
SO, DONATE!

Maybe someone from the linuxquestions guys will get a date in LONDON!

With this in mind, I figure it's time I chipped in as a Contributing member. I've been waiting for an excuse to throw more money at linux causes.

I figure that LQ.org is such a valuable resource to newbies and experienced users alike, it deserves a spot in any linux showcase available. With the inroads that linux is making, especially in Europe, LQ.org is a great thing to hype to fledgling desktop and corporate users taking their first steps or solving complex problems.

Here's to a good trip to the UK! My next post will be as a Contributing Member.

this rules!

I hope you guys make it to London.
India is kind of far, but whatever.
As far as london goes...
There is not much trouble with safety there.
The subway rocks. That will take you pretty much anywhere.
Wherever the subway does not go, the cab can take you.

XavierP 08-30-2004 03:37 PM

The cabs are great in London - real pot luck, you may get a friendly driver, a political and angry driver, a quiet driver or (and this ones my favourite) the guy who waits until you tell him where you want to go and then says "actually, I'm going home" and turns off the meter. :)

The night buses, however, rock. Roll out of the pub or club at a stupid hour of the night and get taken where you need to go for £1. Ah, the number of times I have woken up in the middle of Essex........

The underground stops at about midnight, so buses and cabs are always useful.

finegan 08-31-2004 05:59 PM

And tomorrow we find out if LQ gets to go to the first LWE I'm going to have to miss :(

Cheers,

Finegan

That's cool news.
