LQ firefox search engine?
Is LQ planning to make a search engine for Firefox? Like Google, Wikipedia, etc.? It would be really cool.

really - do it yourself and upload. It's easy, if you don't want to make installable automatically. Mimic any plugin in ~/.mozilla/firefox/*/searchplugins

If I remember correctly, one of the mods posted one a while back. I think there is also one at mozdev.

There is, indeed, one at mozdev. You could also use the "site:" modifier in Google.

The one at mozdev says page not found. I modified another engine and it works ok.

If someone wants to make a nice polished one, we'd be happy to host it at LQ. Please contact me if you're interested. Thanks.

I'm assuming this is straight forum search- what about being able to search the entire LQ? As in, the wiki, hcl, etc.

It is straight forum search. The extension is dependent upon a search engine capable of actually performing the search, and I am not aware of any LQ-wide search system. Extensions for searching wiki/hcl/articles separately would be possible, depending on demand and use of this one. The vast majority of LQ users concentrate within the forums, so it is where the focus seems to be.

Oh yeah, thanks Matir- this extension is really well worth it. Sorry if I sounded a bit cross. Yep, you are right about the forum having the focus. What I was wondering was if an aggregate search was possible, but I guess not as there is no site wide search.
Thanks again.

I understand, and would like to see tighter integration of the wiki, the HCL, and the forums myself. Perhaps even the transformation of the HCL entries into wiki entries to better unify the two, and more encouragement of turning solved threads into wiki entries.
Of course, it would just be plain nice if people searched at all before posting.

AT a minimum, we plan to also offer a wiki search plugin. As for HCL/forum integration (the wiki has a bit of a different focus), we're certainly open to ideas. If you think you have a good one or would just like to discuss the topic, feel free to open a dedicated thread on the topic.
