It would be nice to have some kind of contests that could enable winning of prizes such as books or Linux Pro Magazine etc...
For example, Tutorial Contest could allow members who have more than a specific number of posts (to prevent newbies and cheap tutorials) to write tutorials/articles about various topics. Winner tutorial could be voted 51% by moderators/admins and 49% by members.
You get the idea.
My 2 cents - I do not believe contests restricting newbies is a good idea because if you will check; most of the new threads appear to be started by newbies. If any thing I would intice them to participate in a constructive way.

I concur. I believe any LQ contest or promotion should be equally available to be won by any LQ member, regardless of skill level or linux experience. We're all part of the same community, and equals in that regard, so any contest should be open to all, and winning entrants should be (as they always are if I'm not mistaken) drawn by computer, not selected by humans.
Did you notice how many people created accounts here at LQ just for winning the contests and then vanished ?
I don't think that is helpful to LQ in anyway.
I have not paid attention, but many newbies maybe nothing but readers. I still would not eliminate newbies. If they were to make up a good linux tutorial the post count would not make a difference would it? OK make it a 5 post minimum.

Most newbie's themselves announced that they have joined the forum for that contest.

and those 5 posts should be outside the "Introduction forum"
But still I think it should be restricted to members. (It just requires 30 posts to become a member, which is not too much)

Noobs should take the time and read some of the ancient posts posted by senior members and above... I have just started and I have noticed a few things...like we all start knowing less... LOL less is more !
