Sorry spurious, I wasn't aware of this. It's not a feature I really used.

Hi,

I'd like to be able to see a list of the newest threads... not the newest *posts* since I was last on. I find frequently that I have to sift through many threads that I have seen before because someone has posted to them since I last checked. Is this possible?

Thanks,
Mark.

Muzzy, if enough people are interested in this feature I should be able to add it.
Joey.Dale, there is a thread going where you can submit new titles for consideration.

Make the search button flash and glow in the dark! Make it everpresent on a user's screen the minute they try to start a new thread! Make it stay there even if they turn off their monitor! Oops...ranting.

Seriously, though. I know that people are usually too lazy of mind by nature to do such a thing as search for the answer (I am like that myself a lot). If the search button was perhaps more prominent somehow (which would be hard to do and keep the formatting pleasing), it might get used more. I think that your search works quite well. Its a shame that others are missing out on it.

Hi jeremy,

You know how the newest member of LQ is always shown at the top of the main forums page. I always like to click on the name, and see if he has already posted. If it's a new thread (a new member posting with a specific problem), I like to check it out and help if I can. I figure it's good to try and help new members, as they are more likely to stick around. Is it possible to have more of the newest members shown there? I know I could probably search the members' database by date joined and get them, but I wouldn't bother. I like the feature, because it's right there at the top when I come to the forums.

Regards,

mbegovic,
That is a fantastic thing to do. To always get the current list you could bookmark:

Jeremy

I would appreciate your thoughts on the penultimate thread on www.Groklaw.net under the heading "Grokdoc - A Staus Report". While you don't have to read every posting, I think that the 'idea' is good and in someways duplicates the LQwiki project. Since you now obviously have experience in setting up a wiki on a somewhat similar vein, I would ask in the name of the Open Method (invented therein) if there isn't someway that the LQ community could help and/or benefit from a 'joint' approach.

Cheers

Me again.

I see a post by Thomas Frayne under heading "Setting up Grokdoc: Wiki at LinuxQuestions" in the aforementioned thread, that seems to be right on point.

Sorry I am not smart enough to be able to link you all right there.

Cheers

I have another idea which might be useful for some people... sometimes I see a questions and I think that it would be interesting to find out the answer to that question, because maybe one day it will help me. The auto-email when you post into a thread is nice so that you can see the responses to your posts, but sometimes I don't have anything useful to add to the thread, but I still would like to be notified when an answer is posted...

So my suggestion is a 'notify me of new posts to this thread' button where you dont have to post anything.
But I could just post a short message saying something like 'I would like to know the answer to this as well' and then I don't need the button.

Overall though the site is very good and I hope it won't change much from how it is today - much of the beauty of the site is the simplicity, so adding new features might just make things more confusing.

Muzzy, you can accomplish this by clicking the "Subscribe to This Thread" link at the bottom of each thread.

Just a small little fix:

When you edit a post, you can edit the subject (for spelling miskates), but it will not change outside the thread. Cant think of any other way to explain this so I'll post a link to an example:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=151989

I mistyped "failures", then corrected the subject line, but if you found the thread in the LFS forum, it still showed it as "failers", even after the correction. Not sure if this has been fixed since then.

veritas, this is a limitation of the current implementation and will be address in the future.

Perhaps there is another way that the unanswered could resurface somehow.

Also it would be great if we had some sort of 'closed' questions system, as we do on Experts-Exchange - they even have clean-up crews.
I think it would be good if there was a status that could be set by the thread starter to indicate that the issue has been solved or still needs attention. Then if they don't indicate whether the thread is solved or still needs attention within two weeks, it will be set to inactive. But it avoids reposting the same problem or the thread getting lost in a busy forum - it could be moved to the top or at least be searchable (As in search for all threrads that still need attention).

It would also be cool if a thread could be diplayed in two different forum topics... If I had a question and I didn't know if it was specific to Libranet or if it was a software problem, then it would be good if I could post it and appeal to readers in both topics as opposed to picking one and risk not getting access to all of the boards expertise.

I know that these suggestions would require a lot of db programming but I know I would love to see something like that implemented on many boards.
