LQ and Webkit.

Hi,

Of late, I have been using Arora as my default browser and LQ doesn't play nice with it (or vice-versa? I have no idea). I also tried it with another Webkit browser called Rekonq ending in the same result. Hence I'm assuming it is a LQ issue, please correct me if I'm wrong.

The issue is this, I cannot login into the site. When I provide username and password, it does show me the logged in welcome message but once the site/page loads, I'm not logged in.

Just brought to you attention.

EDIT: I will post along further issue if I find any.

Most likely this is a cookie storage issue. I've never used those browsers you mentioned, but do they handle cookies properly? Have you turned off cookies?

Yes, cookies are perfectly fine.

Yes, I am able to log into other forums but a point to be noted here is most of them are vBulletin forums. Maybe something to think about.

Also, here's a stranger thing, I am able to log into LQ just now, if and only I untick the 'Remember Me' option, else it's like before. I don't see the point in not remembering me as nobody would like to be kicked out in the middle of foruming.

"Remember Me" sets a persistent cookie, while not checking it merely creates a session cookie which expires on closing the browser.

Maybe the browser has a problem with the persistent cookie.

I don't know why you want to insist on the problem being here, let Jeremy or any other author of the site reply. Maybe then we will know it is indeed a problem on my side.

We have quite a few members using browsers based on WebKit and the fact that you can log in if you uncheck "Remember Me" does likely mean it's a local cookie issue. Additionally, there is an open bug report in the Arora tracker indicating you are not the only one having this issue. If there's any additional information we can provide, let me know.

I was not insisting that the problem is on your side. But prima-facie, the evidence is that it is a client-side issue. Because logging in works as expected for the majority of LQ.org users using common browsers. You use an uncommon, rarely used browser, and therefore unless there is evidence to the contrary, I shall have to assume that there is a browser bug.

But don't take it so personally : there is no point in getting annoyed at my replies which were meant to elicit appropriate responses to investigate the problem deeper. The questions are based on my own experiences of browser issues.

(the underlining is mine) I hope no one was confused by the LQ.org reference; as you can see if you follow this link, LQ.org is not LinuxQuestions.org, but belongs to an apparently commercial organization called LifeQuest. The normal abbreviation here is just "LQ".

Same problem.

It seems to be indeed an Arora issue (not webkit, it all works well with Midora).
