I want a FreeDOS forum

Jeremy, is there any chance we could get a FreeDOS forum since it's open source too?

trickykid 06-17-2004 05:12 PM

I would have to say since the demand for something like this is as low as it probably gets, these questions can be asked in General since its not really *nix related. Also something like this would probably increase the wanting of a Windows forum, which is not what this site is really setup for, though we do allow them in General, that's suitable enough for those who do want to ask Windows related questions here.

XavierP 06-17-2004 05:12 PM

I personally don't see a need for a FreeDOS forum. We don't get that many questions on FreeDOS and, AFAIK, none that are specifically FreeDOS related. I would say that questions on FreeDOS fit nicely in Linux-Software.

What sort of use were you thinking you'd get out of it?

slakmagik 06-17-2004 05:14 PM

Well, I'll put in the second (and last) vote. :D

It relates! Hey, dosemu...

Nah, it is a subset of 'Software' but it'd still be cool. ;)

Craigwd 06-17-2004 06:15 PM

You forget something digiot, it's not just a subset of Software, it's an OS, something which in my opinion shouldn't be talked about so lightly and deserves a forum. What kind of use would I get out of the new forum, let me think, oh there's my cdrom driver which isn't working properly at the moment, sound card driver configuring from config.sys and autoexec.bat as well as memory optimizing which is done from those two files as well, and say I want to replace my command.com with dog which is a lightweight command.com replacement I'll need a howto for that. The list could go on endlessly. I'm sure since a lot of Linux geeks are gamers they probably have old games that don't work well under WinXP (and thusly under WINE for that matter) for example so they may need a free OS like FreeDOS. Oh and lets not forget DOS's noteriety for having low-level driver conflicts and the like. Is that enough demand for you trickykid?

darthtux 06-17-2004 07:30 PM

I thought LQ is for *nix based forums.

FreeDOS has mailing lists and an IRC channel.

jeremy 06-17-2004 07:45 PM

Craigwd, I don't think there is enough user demand for a dedicated FreeDOS forum at this time. Do feel free to ask FreeDOS related questions though.

Well, I confess I was making light of the idea of having a FreeDOS forum here because it seems radically unlikely, as Jeremy indicates. But I wasn't making light of the system. However, as a system, it doesn't have much relevance here - it's LinuxQuestions, not Open Source OS Questions (with stretches to *nix more than to other OSS OS) - so I was making a play for the dosemu connection.

I drop a mention of FreeDOS whenever it's relevant and I think it's great. I'm in the minority of Linux users who still actually likes DOS and FreeDOS is quite compatible, yet much enhanced. And I do run it in dosemu and did run it stand alone when my 486 was still alive. Slap djgpp on there and it's also an extremely light *nix.

Still, I don't think getting angry about it will really sway many people to your opinion.

As Jeremy says, absolutely feel free to ask questions about it. I probably don't know much but I and many others will try to answer.

That said, I *could* see an 'Other OS Systems' forum to go with the BSD's and AIX's and 'Other Nix' forums. I just also would see merit in the argument that it was outside LQ's range.

Craigwd 06-17-2004 11:33 PM

Jeremy if you don't create a FreeDOS forum I'll consider that your way of saying that FreeDOS isn't important to the open source community. I know my answer is very heavy, but if you don't provide a forum for it people may not even realize that they should post in General since some people are foreign/have poor english skills and may not even realize that they're supposed to post there. Maybe a better solution would be renaming General to a title more people understand.

jeremy 06-17-2004 11:49 PM

Craigwd,

It's not a matter of importance to the open source community. It a matter of a FreeDOS forum getting enough traffic to warrant a dedicated forum.

What about renaming the General forum?

XavierP 06-18-2004 03:36 AM

The General forum is for threads on Windows, non-*Nix OSes not already covered and anything at all in, well, general. The description of the forum makes this quite clear.

I'm all for that.. we can rename it to Useless Crap Forum... cause that is what mainly resides in there.. ;)

XavierP 06-18-2004 09:04 AM

I'm sensing a slight ill-feeling towards the General forum :) Craigwd - what were you thinking of for a new name for General? Is General not, ermm, general enough for you?

Craigwd 06-18-2004 09:46 AM

No I think a better name would be Miscelaneous.
