I have a few questions about LinuxQuestions, again.

If I remember correctly, last time before today, I've logged in was on 13th May, but it said;
Quote:
There have been 9 threads and 36 posts since your last visit.
Well that would be a little hard to believe. Will you elaborate/explain this one?

Question #2 is the number of Viewing in () next to each forum title. There've been 30 Viewing next to one forum title, upon reloading the page after few minutes, there've been 26 Viewing next to the same forum title. Well I'm not sure I understand that one too, how that one works? Because I haven't found an explanation on the site.

I'll add this just to explain what I mean by explanation;
Quote:
An explanation is a set of statements constructed to describe a set of facts which clarifies the causes, context, and consequences of those facts.
Thank you for understanding!

I'd guess that it's the amount of people viewing the forum right now.

I'm not sure if it includes people that are viewing a thread in that forum.

1) Did you leave LQ then return between 6:39AM and 8:47AM before you noticed those numbers?

2)

That would be my first guess. I've been here long enough to realize that it can vary either way each time the page is reloaded.

Thank you for your replies guys.

I'm pretty sure I haven't log out Mr. Bill.

Well, you are guessing, I am guessing, others do not reply, I guess it's how things work here usually sometimes.

1) You can use the "You last visited" line in the upper right of the forumhome to verify the last time you logged in.
2) That number represents how many people are viewing content in that forum. It changes all the time as people browse the site and therefore change what forum they're in.

1) I knew that, in other words what I wanted to say is, maybe there have been some kind of a database error or something, which maybe you'd like to check. Last few days everything looks OK.

2) Thanks for the explanation. Maybe this could be mentioned somewhere on the site.

1) We don't store this kind of information in the database at this time. The number of posts is calculated based on your last visited time.
2) It's simply not possible to explain in detail every facet of the site, unfortunately. In this case, it's possible that information isn't really that useful, so it may be removed.

2) If you ask me, it is very useful. Don't remove it. What you could do maybe is; rename it or alike, so that it's more obvious and understandable what information is informing about.

You are joking, right? Surely you're not implying that after 3-1/2 years and nearly 1600 posts you suddenly realize that "xx Viewing" isn't descriptive enough for you to understand that it means xx number of people are viewing that forum at that moment. I knew that at first glance! Sheesh...

BTW, Exactly HOW is it so useful that it can't be removed?

Just saying...

Mr. Bill, first you said;
Quote:

Then you said;

So, first you are guessing, then suddenly you know. Opss, something is wrong here.

One reason I find it useful is that members can see which forums are most visited at the given moment and based on that can decide where to jump in to help or get help.

When I started this thread I wasn't the only one I had in mind, many people join LQ every day and there are many newbies here who could use whatever help they can get, not just technical help, but help which means LQ as a site being helpful to them and everyone else for that matter.

So your guess was my guess and I believe there was some kind of a discussion about the topic before and if I remember correctly it was clear to me then that it means how many people are viewing certain forum at the given moment, but I wasn't around here for a full year, so it seems that I've forgotten about what it means, so I started a new thread that to be clarified, because it is not officially explained anywhere on LinuxQuestions.org.
