Location gives me insight into the probable native language & possibly the culture of the poster. It's not about judgement, but understanding. If I know where someone is coming from, literally, as well as figuratively, I can better understand him/her.
I already knew that, but my point was, that just because knowing other's location, age, language etc, makes you feel comfortable, it doesn't mean that you or anyone else has a right to FORCE the people to share what they don't want to, and in a way pry on others. No offense intended.

I think Tobi has explained very well why Distro. shouldn't be made mandatory, also I have noticed that some people just don't want others to know their browsers too (which they use for posting)! I find it very surprising, but if they don't want to share, it shouldn't forced upon them.
I would think that comes automatically. Every member will get his questions answered, if possible, and will, if necessary, also be "taught" how to get the wanted information (Google, man-pages, tldp.org, ...) and how to ask smart questions. In short, LQ is educational. This will lead to more knowledgeable (increased quality) members automatically, to the point where these members are able to help other members.
This way it worked since LQ exists, I would think, and regarding Linux questions I would think that LQ is one of the highest quality forums on the net, if not the one with the highest quality.
I would like to the registration process tightened a little, not loosened or eliminated. I would like to see one or 2 more fields made mandatory: say, location & distro.
I would recommend just detecting the poster's location. It would be more accurate.
