We have no way to persist data on your computer, nothing is hidden and it is very easy to know for certain if a cookie has been set from a specific domain. It's also very easy to see the data that cookie stores. The ad server we use is Open Source, so it's even easy to see what happens from that end.

I do share your opinion about advertisement. Advertisements create a role model for behavior in people, and people in my opinion are stupid to believe it and follow it. But then, they will mob their surroundings, to also follow that model. To make a long story shorts, I do not tolerate advertisement in my TV, or the sound of it in my home, it fills me with disgust and even hate. IMHO anyone who sees one TV advertisement should be send to prison for life in solitary (or be executed) to cleanse mankind of this disgusting evil.
Nevertheless this is a free country, and it is not immoral to try to make money with a forum. Well we all can set up a forum at our cost to do good to the public. But who here has done that? (link please).
Furthermore the objections that Java script blocking don't stop the OpenX cookie seem rather ridiculous. Also the screen shot with reference to three cookies without any information of any kind is ridiculous as a proof for anything. And yes, also the hint, that cookies are stored in the profile folder is no evidence of capital offense.
It seems, that extremist hardcore anti-advertisement attitude (that I do sympathize with) is mixing with lack of knowledge & conspiracy theory in this thread.
Otherwise please bring forth proof, someone who knows what he is talking of.
PS: I always delete every cookie when the browser is closed, and block third party cookies. In my opinion this is the only thing that is sensible. And uMatrix I think is an even more interesting Extension than uBlock.
PPS: But I must admit that linuxquestions.org (whatever the merits) is heavily cross scripted as not often seen. I think that's disgusting indeed. But I don't care as my uMatrix disallows this kind of activities.
I put up a Wordpress blog, and I eliminated crosscripting from it when I realised it:
- gravatar
- goggle fonts
- google api jQuery
Because I don't approve of my visitors being fed to the hyenas.
this is advertising to a MICROSOFT .exe !!!!!
and you have to buy this for $19.95
and this will LIKELY install the MALWARE!!!!!!
I agree here, first thing I thought of upon seeing that SPAM!

If you are using Firefox , for example , search your hard disk for this
..... APPDATA\ROAMING\MOZILLA\FIREFOX\PROFILES\5BR6XDQH.DEFAULT-1353496546002\COOKIES.SQLITE
or install SuperAntiSpyware ( free ) and it will find it for you , even on " quick scan "
This is where the rev.linuxquestions.org tracking cookie is hiding (along with others from this forum) and collecting your personal data
So we're looking at Windows Registry keys now? Heavens! Are you running Windows Internet Explorer?!?
I'm sorry, but you're not off half cocked, you are fully off. As JohnVV said, clear your cache.
Jeremy's not going to say it, but I will, and probably be admonished for it, but if you're so very paranoid about LQ, then get off the site. You have nothing better to do with your time than to search for conspiracy theories against a free advice site? This is the Internet, there are a LOT more sites out there trying desperately to do a ton more than the worst your talking about here. I mean, come on, I log into Google, they go crazy collecting stuff, so why not go after them versus jumping all over this one site here?

Well said!
Claiming evil despite all the patient explanations given by Jeremy is just spreading FUD. Almost trollish behavior. I am sure Jeremy appreciates hearing feedback from members but I do not think he deserves this kind of behavior.
Can I add my two cents? I expect advertisements on a site like this. After all you need some source of funds to run it. But I didn't expect to see an advert for a download site supplying Windows drivers! That is downright weird. Would someone really come to to a site called Linux Questions and see that ad and say "Gee, Windows drivers! Just what I was looking for."

I think you did. Thanks a lot for LQ, Jeremy. As a side note, I wonder if there's any relationship between user chigurh's nickname and this character from a well-known novel by Cormac McCarthy (see also the movie by the Cohen brothers).
My n00b 2c: No ads are visible (at least to me) using noscript with firefox. Been a member long time, and really never noticed any ads on here ever. And what's wrong with the dude making some money off of his site? Do people really expect him to pay for server space out of his own pocket?

It's Jeremy's site. Bottom line. And while we use Jeremy's site we agree to abide by Jeremy's rules.
