Forum Search Improvement
 

Hi

It is highly likely that what I am about to suggest has already been implemented in another, and possibly better way. If so any moderator who reads this has my permission to delete this post, no hard feelings.

Another forum of which I am a member has a personal page for each member that, amongst other things, provides links to:
(a) All of the member's recent postings, and
(b) All recent responces to the member's postings.

I find these to be very useful, as it allows you to quickly update any postings you have recently made, as well as to quickly review any responces that you have received, without having to search through numerous other postings. I do hasten to add that I also enjoy reading through other members' postings, to see what issues other members have raised and the reponces thye have received. I have learnt many useful things from doing this, but I prefer to do so after I have checked on my own postings.

I know that we have a search facility, but it took me almost half-an-hour to figure out how to use it and find two previous posts that I had written and wanted to update. I am sure that not all noobs will be as slow to pick things up as me, but I am also sure that some others wil have similar problems.

If you're logged in on LQ then in the navigation pane on the right you find "My Posts" and "My Threads" under the "My LQ" header. Is that of any help?

I just remembered spmething else that I meant to include in my previous posting. Is there anyway to update the heading of a thread to indicate that the initial problem has been fixed or resolved. When searching through other threads it would be useful to know if the thread contains a response that answered the issues that was raised. I am aware that not everyone would update their threads to show that they had received a response, but it would be useful when they did.

Thanks for the amazingly fast response.

Looking at the top of my page I can see a menu bar that shows headings like "Home", "Forums", etc. The last of these says "My LQ, but I can't see anything about "My Posts" or "My Threads". The "Search" and "Quick Links" menus have a triangle that allows me to access sub-menus, buy I can't access any sub-menus under "My LQ". From what you have mentioned it sounds to be exactly what I had in mind, but I just can see them.

Please overlook my obtuseness, I have just found the links that you referred to in you response and they are exectly what I had in mind. I was looking at the right-hand side of the menu bar at the top of the page not at the not in the navigation panes that you clearly referred to.

NP. Now on to the "solved" part...

You can also access this information via the statistics tab in your profile. I'll have a comment on the "solved" issue in the near future. :jawa:

Thank you, I was able to locate the required information in the statistics tab in my profile. To be honest, I almost missed it because I was looking at the Mini Statistics area at first, but I was determined not to make the same mistake twice, and it only took me a few more seconds to find the correct area that you referred to.

I look forward to your response to my suggestion regarding "solved" problems, regardless of whether my suggestion is accepted or not.

My sincere congratulations and thanks to all of the moderators at Linux Answers, as well as the more experienced members. You all allow us noobs to pick your brains and learn from your experience, and put up with our questions, whether inane or insightful, with tremendous good humour and patience.

Is there any way to see the newest posts first instead than having to go to the end of the thread ?

On all threads with new posts, you can click on the little downward -facing arrow next to the thread title to take you to the first unread post.

I would still like it better with the newer posts first.

This is a forum, not an organizer, but we can't have everything in life I guess.

i think it would be helpful if there were an option for strict and explicit search strings.

i mean, when you try to search for make -C $KDIR M='pwd', you are probably not interested in finding somethong only on the pwd string, you are looking for all the punctuation as well.

is there a way to achieve this now? i have looked in the advanced search page but not found anything apropriate

Yes. In the "My LQ" menu on the right, go to "Edit Options".

In the middle of the page is the "Thread Display Options" menu. The second option is "Thread Display Mode". You can select "Oldest First" (default) or "Newest First".

Go to the bottom of the page and select "Save Changes".

however, I still think that the board should be set to default to new threads and new posts first
