Is there a way to flag suspected homework threads?

yep: click on the "report" button at the bottom of the first post in the thread, and type in "suspected homework question" in the box and submit. Then a moderator will review the thread and take appropriate action as needed.

It's probably best to tell the OP to try to solve it themselves and give them some resources, but not the answer.

I agree- we should at least be courteous and helpful. If someone is studying GNU/Linux and the community they turn to for help comes off smug or unfriendly, how much farther do you suppose they will pursue their studies beyond the current semester?

Just my

I agree, but last night there were multiple threads started by someone, each of which were obviously homework, after the first homework post was quickly dealt with by doing what TeXMex suggests here and being informed of the homework rule. The first post even had multiple choice questions. There wasn't even an effort to ask the question in accordance with the rules. The second questions was "true or false...this option on this command does this?"

Hmmm... Almost makes one wonder why they took the class at all, doesn't it?

Ah well, even I can't be right all the time.

Cheers
