Few suggestions
1. Can we have something like "Hot Threads For Last Week" link in the Main Menu?
What I mean is;sometimes I don't visit LQ for a week or more and when I log in I would like to be able to see the threads which had most replies for the certain period of time because those threads are usually most interesting to participate or read (at least to me) and that's where I would like to click first after I see if there's anything new in my subscribed threads. 2. I was thinking that maybe something like "Top Posters" during last week or certain period of time would be a nice thing to see somewhere in LQ. I would like to know what interested LQers think about this. Thank you. P.S. I didn't start two separated threads because I don't see the need for that. |

Once upon a time there was a skydiving team named De Guello who won the Texas 20-way championship every year by huge margins. I suggested that the 2nd place trophy be made 2 or 3 times the size of the 1st place trophy. Of course that wasn't done, but it would have given appropriate recognition to the winner of the "real" competition. Or else made it very interesting -- would De Guello have tried to see if they could control their performance to to miss 1st by say one point? Perhaps Jeremy could an informal list of the top N posters here for say the next 4 weeks. I'd very surprised if it was significantly different from the list of all time top posters. Quote:

What I had in mind is completely different from those entries and as such it wouldn't be possible that same few threads would always be in the list because threads that I had in mind wouldn't be threads with most replies ever than threads with most replies during last week, for example. Quote:

Personally, I like both ideas. I'd especially be interested in the Hot Threads.

Yeah, some boards utilize notification for this via icons that are ledgeable.
Hacking questions, should by mandate, be given by: ??/?? represented by a small code warrior, wielding a halberd, for easy reference and entry. And please, don't ever re-edit someone. It's just so inconsiderate [HERE |
dragonslayer48dx,thanks.
cloud9repo,there's something interesting in what you've suggested,I guess we will have to wait and see what will Jeremy say about all of this. |
what if, instead of a "most posts" list, you do something like "most thanked" and show th threads where those people got thanked?
|
akuthia,
Have a look at this thread. |
hmm, well, if thanks are going to be gamed, most posts are going to be even easier, and more likely to be gamed, imo
|
I started to disagree -- assuming that those trying to game the proposed system would try to post remotely useful msgs. Unfortunately I was wrong. It may be only slightly more difficult: a "Right on." here; a "You rock" there, strew a few "Thanks, that was a great answer." about & you're set to rival Chris (acid_kewpie, 31,622, no 31,624 posts at last count). His current average is 11.21 ppd (posts per day), so if you could manage 150 in a week, I think you'd have a good chance of topping him. If only someone would set themselves the goal of doing it honestly.
Interesting, if I were to do that, I could get my ppd over 2.00 -- here's the "math": Code:
$ DD=20041019 # 10-14-04, the date I signed up |
Personally I don't like any of the "ranking" jeremy has introduced - and I've let him know every time he asked.
It takes very little time on the board to allow a determination of who's answers are (generally) of value and who's aren't. No need for a (meaningless) post/thanked count, nor rank. But I'm obviously swimming against the tide ... |
Thanks for the feedback. If members are interested in a "Hot Threads For Last Week" and/or a "Top Posters" list, it's something I'd consider implementing here at LQ. I'll allow a little time for pros/cons in this thread and we'll take it from there.
