As you know, the code that runs AQ and CQ will also soon run LQ. One advantage of TQN is that we can roll out potential new features on smaller member sites and get feedback before adding them here at LQ. OK, Jeremy, you asked for it: IF one could turn off ALL notifications of mentions, hashtags, etc., then I'd say fine. If not, PLEASE don't extend it to the rest of LQ; in my experience, at least 90% of all SN traffic is effectively spam. I come here to solve problems, not to socialize. That's my two bits...

I fully agree.

The test board hasn't been used enough to see how (if?) this social network 'stuff' will show in normal usage (normal being asking and answering issues).

I would suggest not making it the default (all is turned on/shown [in whatever way] on the test board), or even better: Do not implement it in the new LQ version.

FWIW, neither of these features are in any way related to social networking (aside from using the existing @ and # conventions). The User Tagging and Quote Notification should help ensure conversations that you are currently participating in are not missed and that members who think you are knowledgeable about a topic can make you aware of it, while Hash Tag Support (and the ability to subscribe to tags and hash tags) will help allow you to surface content you find interesting in an automated way.

While CQ and AQ are small (as LQ once was) and still growing, they are in no way test boards; they are live sites that we hope will flourish in a similar manner as this site. That said, it is nice to be able to have a site with less traffic and a less established member base to test new features and functionality on.

If would only consider using such a feature if:
-- the watched person is not alerted to the fact that I'm stalking them
-- If the board displays the number of stalkers for each user, it does not display WHO, individually, the followers are
-- (preferably) option is provided to choose between immediate notification vs batched, once daily, "New posts by JimmyJoe today"

Each time anyone posts (or just a post which starts a thread?) person is able to enter arbitrary 'tagword' string...
...and anyone subscribed to that tagword receives a nofication each time a future post (in any thread) bears that tagword?

I would be reluctant to use this.
If we're locked into using a fixed set of tagwords, I wouldn't expect my notion of "funny" or "interesting" or "for_followup"
to align with that of other taggers. If we are NOT locked into using arbitrary keywords, I might choose something off-the-wall like "cowdung"... but there's nothing preventing other users from applying "cowdung" tag to threads in which I have no interest.

The WORST (and I don't know whether it applies to this particular LQ forum) "feature":
1) You post to a thread and subscribe to it
2) someone places a followup post containing nothing other than a thumbs up icon or other smiley
3) You receive notification stating "you will not receive further notifications until you revisit the thread"
4) lather, rinse, repeat... ad nauseum

I like to see those features in LQ

I cannot see myself use these features. I also suspect some 'social-networking' motivations behind the idea. But hey, when people want those features, go ahead and implement them. Although I'm rather skeptical as to the success to be expected. I do not think many members of this forum will use that. Personally I'm more interested in specific topics than what a certain member, may he or she be as knowledgeable about Linux as can be imagined, has to say. Frankly, I couldn't care less.

This works different. For example, I know that fellow member cascade9 has pretty good knowledge about hardware, so when I see a thread where I suspect that he has additional explanations or can help if I am out of ideas I can use user-tagging to make him aware of the thread, for example with a sentence like:

Personally adding these features would allow better cross linking of posts, however you are opening LQ to the dreaded post bomb of spam that makes social forums the disaster they have become.

Eg. I post about grub, forum spammer uses that tag to link his/her post about whatever and add a hashlink to an unrelated site that say silently loads a j-script to copy a file to the temp folder and run it as a background task.

I would only suggest rolling these features out if each user can turn them off individually. I personally do not want to know everytime someone makes a post that "might interest" me. I dont even want to see the 'Hey, see whats going on at LQ this month' email. LQ is a forum for professionals and technically minded individuals whom share knowledge in a professional manner (mostly :P), I do not see any advantage of adding user hashes or wordtags when the LQ search does a wonderful job of finding answers the way it is. Forcing users to make subjects more than "Help, it doesnt work" and specify certian key information like flavor, revision and then a concise question about the issue would be of better use. better yet have the new thread/post dialogue require such information so that indexed searches ould be made simply on linux flavour or package name.
