Embedded on-line bookmarking
What if we (registered users) could bookmark threads/posts. Then a link would appear (perhaps in the main menu on the right, or in My LQ) called "Bookmarks", "My Bookmarks" or something alike.
Taking this even further, one should be able to choose wether a bookmark is public or private, and other users could see in my profile my public bookmarks, along with the rest of the information that is already visible there. Private bookmarks would just be visible for the user. I know I can bookmark in my browser, but I came up with this exactly because I want to bookmark something here at work, where I am right now, so that I can see it later at home. You see, I have windows at work, and linux at home, so what I read here I cannot test. I imagine the usefulness of such an option goes beyond my current personal need, but it was just an example. I know this "Subscribe to this thread" option, but bookmarking is not just the same, I think. I do not want to be notified by e-mail about new posts to a thread. I could even bookmark a single post. The intention here is just to revisit the bookmarked page later. In this very moment I am sending my self the URL to my personal e-mail account, so that I can recall it from home at night. Regards |
There already is a "My Bookmarks" feature in your UserCP.

Then why don't you give the possibility to bookmark a thread from the thread's page. Or I have to manually copy the URL, go to UserCP and bookmark it? Just suggesting, perhaps is not a priority or you don't have the time, or perhaps is possible and I don't know it.
I have to admit I didn't know anything about this Control Panel. If I would, believe me, I wouldn't have asked this the way I did. Surely I'll spent know a few minutes exploring it, because at first glance I saw lots of options I didn't know. Thanks again, and surprised for the rapid responses I am getting today. This is almost like IM. Regards |
The bookmarks feature is mostly for external links and requires more than just a threadid, so it wouldn't really be feasible to have a "bookmark this thread" type link. You can of course subscribe to a thread and have it appear in your UserCP also (these however are not viewable by others).

OK, it works for me anyway, although not as easy as I would like it to be. I'll copy/paste the complete thread URL and bookmark it there manually. It is a little bit lenghty but it serves my purposes. Now I do not need to e-mail URL's to my self!

I would like to revive the the question of bookmarks.
By bookmarks, I mean, as the OP did, a simple bookmark system that each user member has and not the bookmark system in the UserCP which serves other purposes and is cumbersome and in an obscure place requiring the member to leave the page s/he is currently on. What is needed is a drop down link, analogue the "thread tools" at the top of each thread, in which we can simply add a bookmark or pick one to go to. Something simple and convenient on each page. I, too, like the OP, have been subscribing to threads just in order to bookmark them. It is much easier than adding a bookmark to the social bookmarking facility, but unfortunately just as cumbersome to retrieve. Let's have a member's private bookmark system which is simple to use and always available. |
