If I post a question in a dated or obscure thread, and nobody notices it, am I allowed to post it again as a new thread? (Anyone prepared to post a rude response to this might note that I am asking before double posting, and you are making an ass of yourself.)

Hmmm, pre-emptive rudeness. Well done, mate.
Added:
Your original post should have had 2 bumps if it got no response. If it got no responses, it might have been due to either lack of any useful information in the question, or the perception by the readers that helping you would be an issue in itself. Don't forget that the people who respond on this site, sometimes spending a LOT of their own personal time doing research and typing responses, are volunteers. It's up to you to make it an enjoyable experience for them to answer you. Starting off a post with pre-emptive nastiness probably won't get you a lot of useful answers.

Instead of double posting, the best thing to do would be report your post and a moderator will move it to an existing or new thread.
Actually the best thing to do is to respond with more info, other things you might have tried or steps that failed. If you post and simply just wait for a response, it might not ever occur. You should always continue investigating your question or issue. If you find an answer before someone actually does reply, posting it in response might just help the next newbie with the same exact question.
But in shorter terms, no, never double post, there's never a good reason to do so and any double posts will be closed by a moderator.
