Intended for members who are on board with trying to keep LQ a cordial and inviting forum:

Consider not adding to threads which do not require more info

I will say self included, and that many of us could possibly be guilty of this from time to time.
There seems to be a "pile on" effect sometimes where we have a poor question which engenders a great deal of unnecessary replies. One of our members usually gets it right and advises the OP to read the rules, the FAQ, other proper references, and invites the OP to revise their question.
Unfortunately, many of us cannot leave that alone, so we chime in.
We do not always chime in with good civility, and further sometimes things end up with a number of members discussing the topic, or something related to it, and then nearly hijacking the entire thread.
Even if the replies are all cordial, we may have a very lengthy thread of discussion where the OP never returned.
The LQ rules and advice do actually guide us, albeit politely, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all."
If you see a bad question and can't nicely say to the OP the correct advice, consider not replying.
If another member has already correctly handled it, consider not adding to that.
If another member has handled it poorly and been unhelpful, consider reporting their post and still not adding to the thread.
