ok - first of all I would like to insist that I'm trying to word this very respectfully- and secondly, I'm not trying to get myself made a moderator.

If you guys (aka those with power) feel that this thread is uncalled for and disrespectful, please lock and/or delete.

I feel that a new moderator should be appointed to LQ to aid and smooth the running of this great site. Sorry I'm not able to express this in paragraph form, so here it is in point form:

Observations

1) Over the last few days/weeks I have been noticing that jeremy has been getting stressed out. (well, as much as one can tell from internet postings)

2) The moderators are also heavily worked.

3) The site is growing every day.

4) A question slipped through in "LQ news articles", a forum that requires screening.

5) Mods (and jeremy) are not on the site 24/7 as they have thier own lives to live.

6) The last mod was appointed at least a year ago.

Pre-emptive Rebuttal

1) Perhaps jeremy has been too busy to appoint another moderator.
Ok- but this is what I'm talking about. ;)

2) There is nobody capable enough to be a moderator.
This is very sad- and not much we can do about it. :(

3) There is no need for another moderator.
To ease the stress on current moderators and jeremy, I think that another moderator, even one with restricted powers would be useful.

4) You just want: the job/to stir up trouble
I don't think I qualify for the positition of moderator, and the last thing I want is to stir up trouble.

Questions

1) Must a moderator have more than just a decent knowledge of Linux?

2) Is it possible to have a restricted moderator? (I'm not sure what I mean by this, but is there a more powerful mod / less powerful mod? Does it have anything to do with the subforums that they moderate? (not talking about jeremy, just moderators)

In wrapping this post up, I'd like to emphasise that I think the mods do a great job, I'm not trying to depreciate them in any way. These guys are giving up thier time to help this site run- they deserve our respect.

If I remember my dates correctly, Tinkster and I were invited to become mods in the spring of last year. jtshaw and michaelk were invited to become mods earlier this year. -- J.W.

man. Ok. I'll edit my post then. wow, we really have more mods than I thought- is there a way to look at a "line up of mods" ?

I think we've had about 5 mods appointed since Ray. I've not really been stressed out, but due to some non-LQ things I have been less active than normal (which means I am still here many times a day - just not as much as usual). that being said, we are constantly assessing the mod team and add additional members when the need arises.

IMHO, even a novice can make for a great moderator. A moderator's job is to keep things civil, keep spam under control, and to promote productive discussion. In-depth knowledge of Linux is not required for that, as mods are not called to answer every Linux question in every thread.

yeah- I kinda figured that out, but I was wondering if jeremy prefers his mods to have an excellent knowledge of linux (though I can't see why he would)
