My 2p now. Avatars do not enhance anything about a site. We already have the ability to have sigs, and if you can't express yourself in your sig, then you're not particularly expressive.

People will be able to get a handle on your personality by reading what you post, not be seeing what tacky picture you decide to put against your name.

I, for one, am getting thoroughly tired of seeing another 'Can we have avatars?' thread every time I log on. Perhaps Jeremy should make it expressely clear that avatars are not an option, not now and not in the future, on the registration page.
