An Idea: Memberlist showing Distro

Is there anyway to look at the memberlist by distro?

I think it would be an awesom idea for LQ to have a pie-chart, or a graph showing the percentange of membes using each and every distro out there. That way new people, like myself, can also gauge which distro is the most trusted, used, and etc.

yeeee-eees..... but some members, like me, list more than one distro. And other members, like you, don't list any at all. Wouldn't that distort the results somewhat?

what about the users that don't select their distro at all? it wouldn't give the right picture in my opinion...unless it would be made so that everybody would be forced to choose a distro. and then, listing every distribution is difficult since they come and go (plus versions) quite quickly...and if it would automatically "collect" the distros from the user profiles or something, then what about if people call the same distribution with a different name (like somebody says RedHat, somebody RH and so on)...

it sounds nice but making it sounds like a lot of work, perhaps for a thing that doesn't work (show the right picture of a situation).

but if it could be made working, it would definitely be a nice thing :) (though I'm not that interested in what distros people use..)

Well that the whole point about statistic reports. There are knowns and unknowns, and it's up to the stat guy of how to present this information.

Of course there would combinations, multi-boots, but that can be taken into account.

I would do it myself if I had the permission to.

Maybe we could make two sections.. Main Distro: and then Others: ;)

Oh well.. I'm not as interested in what distro's people use.. I just like for them to state it when asking questions, helps tremendously. :)

The main problem that I see is that, since the distribution box is a text box entry with no validation or checking, the info it contains is not suitable for this kind of thing (ie. Red Hat alone will show up as RH, RHL, RHEL, Red Hat, RedHat, and myriad other combinations).

hi there,

my opinion: i really don't care what others use but....

i think this question can be somehow connected to the Member's Choice Award - Distribution of the year.
I know that is not the same thing but give an idea about what people at LQ are running.
My suggestion: maybe, for those that are interested in distro ranking here could be implemented a direct link for the Last Member's Choice Awards where newbies could see and enjoy what people use. What I mean with a direct link is something that they could find with a click. :D
Anyway it is possible to find the results through "search". But ....
Just think that the Member's choice should be kept "easier" for people's curiosity.

Yea, I tried search, although I feel a graphical representation would be much better. It's nothing to do with being the most popular distro, I just think it would be a good thing to have for new people to see to make their decision much easier, rather than reading millions and millions of reviews.

Most popular distro... perhaps? There could also be most functional, as well as most extensive. I guess what I am just trying to get at is a graphical representation of the pro's and con's, gauging different attributes of an OS. Like those radar graphs, or bar graphs for characters in video games.
