Adding a new Distro: MEPIS

I think it would be a good idea to add a MEPIS forum. There really isn't any other place that has a forum for MEPIS other than MEPIS.org itself and it uses drupal so the format isn't up to what it should be. Anyways...MEPIS is a contendor distro in that it is now in distrowatches top ten and it keeps on gaining momentum. A few weeks ago it wasn't in the top ten and it is now #8 and rising (over the last month) and #10 (over the last 6 months).

It is being heralded by many people to be one of the best debian based distros out there with unsurpassed hardware detection, plug and play support, and wireless support. I know I would be one to visit the forum often...and I'll get the forum lurkers from mepis.org to rally support behind this post (if I can) to let you know how many of us are out there!

Thanks for the consideration!

I refer you to the (extremely long) Why is there no forum for SuSE????? thread.

Basically, policy on LQ is for the distribution itself to agree to support (in some way or another) a forum on LQ. Normally, Jeremy contacts the distro and asks them the question. If they agree, a new sub-forum is created, if not it doesn't.

As an active user, why don't you email the distro team and ask them if they'd be willing to support a forum in LQ?

I have contacted MEPIS in the past, but got no response. I'll try again.

Please, keep on trying, Mr. J. People deserve to know MEPIS.

Agreed

People need to know why MEPIS is currently the 8th most popular distro via count at distrowatch.

Why make Jeremy do all the hard work?

If you realy want a Mepis forum here, you could do the following:
Email the team at Mepis. Explain that you are an active member of LQ. Explain that there are a number of Mepis users here who would be very happy if a Mepis forum could be created. Ask very politely if they would be prepared to support the setting up of a forum (by whatever means), explain that we have a number of 'official forums' (for example, we are the official Slackware help forum). Tell them about the size of our membership. Ask them to contact Jeremy. Try to stress that as a Mepis user for x length of time, it would really enhance your use and enjoyment of the distro if your favourite Linux forumcould have a Mepis forum.

Basically. lay it on thick but be polite - we don't want to annoy them.

Let us know how you get on - with Jeremy asking from his end, and you representing the user base, things may happen.

Mr. X.,

Ok, I'll do that. Hope this is solved & the forum soon be set up. Many thanx for responding.

FWIW, I sent an email earlier today. If I get a response I will let everyone know. I look forward to having a MEPIS forum here at LQ.

Jeremy, could you tell me what exactly happened with Gentoo? Did they just not respond or did they say thay don't want it? I'm wondering if my potential writing to them would be any good, or if they would just consider it a nuisance.

super_ Q 05-12-2004 07:46 PM

I'm also waiting for a response from Warren ( the MEPIS' founder ).

So far, we got 3 users interested. Who else?

jeremy 05-12-2004 07:48 PM

mbegovic, all I'll say on that is... stay tuned :study:

Mepis User

I am a relatively new Mepis user. I have used RedHat for several versions and now have moved to Mepis. My knowledge of Linux is, however, still at the Noobie level and I would be very happy to find a Mepis forum here. Hopefully the Mepis developers will see the benefits too!
