2012 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Award Nominees

In previous years, while soliciting feedback for Members Choice nominees, I have posted the polls but kept voting closed. As this caused confusion on multiple levels and resulted in a high number of "why can't I vote" questions, we have decided to try something new this year. I am going to post each category as an individual post in this thread. Each post will contain the category name and all nominees. Any feedback, including additions and deletions should be posted in this thread. Please include the category name and your suggestion in each post (ideally one category per post). When it's time to vote, I'll post the polls which will be open immediately when posted. If you have any general feedback on the MCA's, this thread would be appropriate for that as well.

Thanks Jeremy.

Browser of the Year:
I would also add dwb
http://portix.bitbucket.org/dwb/

In the Programming Language of the Year section it says:

Quote:

Clojure
Lisp
Scheme
I believe it should say:
Quote:

Clojure
Common Lisp
Scheme
...all of them being dialects of Lisp.

The X Terminal Emulator section:

Sakura is also quite popular.
I assume we're putting the whole rxvt family together: rxvt, rxvt-unicode and mrxvt.

Sakura has been added. Correct that it's the entire rxvt family together.

- The title of post #15 is wrong, should be audio editor, is video player.

TobiSGD 12-13-2012 07:49 PM

KOffice is dead since September, according to Wikipedia, so I am not sure if it should still be in there.
I would rather see its fork Calligra see in there, or at least added.

---------- Post added 14th Dec 2012 at 02:49 ----------

I miss Roxterm in the terminal emulator list.

Not that I want to bug you, but the title of post #15 is still wrong, is Audio Media Player, should be Audio Editing (or similar).

You're correct. That category has been removed and was posted inadvertently; it's been deleted. Thanks again.

How about Fuduntu in desktop of the year? Optimised for laptops, rolling release, independent: it fills a distinctive niche. It's 27 on the Distrowatch hit list (ahead of several you've included) and I gave it 9/10 in a review.

Backup application, afio perhaps? ;)

markush 12-15-2012 12:25 PM

I would suggest to split Windowmanagers into two categories "Tiling Windowmanagers" and "Windowmanagers". The reason is that the difference between a tiling Windowmanager and a normal Windowmanager is bigger than between a Windowmanager and a Desktop Environment.

Also I would suggest to add qterminal to the "Terminal Emulator of the Year" section.

Thanks for the feedback. I don't think it's realistic to break the Window Manager category into multiple polls. There are already over 30 polls. If we got down to the granularity some members would like to see, there would be 100's if not 1000's of polls. That would be a net decline in the usefulness of the awards IMHO. We try to strike the best balance we can, and do modify the polls and nominees every year, based on feedback.

Is it possible add OpenBSD and NetBSD for Server Distribution of the Year category?

We have no plans to add non-Linux options to any of the distro categories.
