2012 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Award Categories

It's almost time for the 2012 LinuxQuestions.org Members Choice Awards. Here is the list of proposed categories for this year. Keep in mind that while we understand that some categories end up containing projects that might not be directly comparable, it's simply not feasible to have enough categories to be all encompassing. If you have suggestions on additions, subtractions or modifications, let us know. I'll be finalizing the list and posting the polls based on feedback from this thread.

Thanks Jeremy.

Quite exhaustive list of categories.

Personally, I'm not interested in any of the three categories that you mentioned.

Any thoughts on introducing an X terminal emulator category?

My gut is that this would not be a highly contested category, nor one that would draw sufficient interest; but I'm certainly open to feedback on the topic.

X terminal emulator was good idea.
My 2 cents ;)

What are the reasons for removing these ? Are there just too few of them ?

Media center should be removed.

The last three interest me.

There are a variety of reasons we'd remove a poll, including but not limited to:

* lack of participation
* lack of viable options
* lack of competitive options
* poorly defined category

Based on feedback and further thought, we'll be removing all three of the listed categories this year. I'll be posting the polls (for feedback, voting will not start until at least next week) shortly, but I'd be interested in any last minute feedback on potentially adding any of the following categories:

Quote:

X terminal emulator <- as previously suggested
Shell of the Year <- a category that we removed but would consider bringing back for a year
Open Source Hardware <- Beagle Board, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Pandora, Bug Labs, etc.

Terminal emulator would be a great category, plenty to choose from.

Shell of the year I think would be less successful because most people don't care and just use bash. There are a good number of choices tho.

Open Source Hardware would work, but not all these devices are designed for the same thing, I'm not sure that it would be too meaningful.

I'd have thought there are quite a few video editors: I know I consulted a previous poll before choosing one myself.

Here's the final list of categories this year:

Quote:

VoIP Application of the Year
Virtualization Product of the Year
Audio Media Player Application of the Year
Video Media Player Application of the Year
Graphics Application of the Year
Network Security Application of the Year
Host Security Application of the Year
Network Monitoring Application of the Year
IDE/Web Development Editor of the Year
Text Editor of the Year

Open Source Game of the Year
Programming Language of the Year
Revision Control System of the Year

Open Source CMS/Blogging platform
Configuration Management Tool of the Year
Open Source Web Framework of the Year
Web Server of the Year (NEW)
X Terminal Emulator of the Year (NEW)
Open Source Hardware Product of the Year (NEW)
Thanks again for the feedback. Unlike in previous years, where I posted the full polls and forum ahead of time but held voting until we gathered feedback (which caused confusion on multiple levels and a string of "why can't I vote" posts), this year I am going to start a single thread in the LQS&F forum with one category per post. This will allow full discussion of the poll options with hopefully less confusion. Stay tuned.
