0 replies email not received today ...
 

also I could not find my subscription thereto on 'My LQ' pages. Has this disappeared or am I truly the only disfunctional one here? I didn't consider this to be a bug (maybe its a feature 'a la Microsoft?'?

Secondly ... Is there anyway to re-program the Subscribe to the Thread [found under the new 'Thread Tools' dropdown menu], because if, as when I finally found the '0 Reply Threads' in the second 'Main Menu' on the right of my screen, I subscribe to a thread I am now presented with a 'mandatory' 'Add Subscription' box [upon which I have to click] before waiting for an automagically disappearing 'Proceed' box ... then I get back to the subscribed to thread ... then I have to click on my back button (3) THREE times to get back to the '0 Reply Threads' page. I am using firefox 1.5 on Suse10oss64-bit. Is there a way round this?

Likewise unsubscribing to the same thread goes to the proceed button box but does not revert to the 0 Reply threads list.

The 0 reply email has temporarily been disabled, but we have something much slicker due out soon. Subscribing does have an extra step now, but that's due the the increased functionality wrt notifications. If I understand you correctly, using tabs (ie 0 replies in one tab and then open and subscribe to the threads in another) should make things easier on you. If I'm misunderstanding what you're attempting, let me know.

Well your suggestion of using 'open in a tab' works but like my back button method, there appears to be no updating on the list (whatever forum) of the threads that I have visited [yes, I did check that I wasn't using my fonts and colors in the Firefox preferences] so it is confusing where I was in my reading of the list.

Glad to hear that I am not the only one that didn't receive my daily email.

By the way, did I automagically loose my status as a Contributing Member, or can all members turn off ads?

I also note that my public distribution list has been somewhat shortened both if you click on my screen name and view public profile, or under my screen name - I guess this is not really too important if you haven't turned off the ability to view people's signatures 9where my full list appears). That reminds me that it is time to update it to reflect my LVMed multiboot multidistro no longer vmwared on a Windows box, I just have to crack 'xen3.0 64-bit' to be able to load all my old distros - so that I can be more productive in my responses to 0 replies questions.

Sorry not to have seen you at the London LWE this year - I couldn't make it from the Isle of Man.

having just posted the foregoing: How do I get back to the original or updated thread that i was replying to?

I am sure that in the old days (remember those?) when I hit the back button in Firefox or on my Logitech MX-Laser mouse I would not first get to see my posting (edit) box - or am I dreaming?

PS: Why, when I am in this edit box, does my mouse wheel not scroll the page down so that I can click on the Submit and/or Preview buttons (which are off my screen? I note that this doesn't work even if I have the mouse cursor outside the edit box - I have to click somewhere outside the box and then the screen scrolls again. do you gurus have a magic hotkey combo to avoid having to click everywhere? I must admit that I have gotten rather too used to not using my mouse (since most of my reading of LQ and Groklaw is done on a tablet PC using the pageup/pagedown scroll button and the handwriting input panel using the stylus - hence my preoccupation with the 'back button' issues, that I have been harping on in this thread.

When you subscribe to a thread, are you not returned to it - you should be. As for the back button, it's always tenuous at best. Between the multiple levels of caching we are doing (with more to come) and the AJAX functionality, there's just no way to guaranteed things will work properly going back (especially depending on what type of page you are going "back" to).

Just to add to the above (this was written before jeremy's reply came through on my evolution email system):

i have just found that if I scroll up through a "code" box AND the mouse cursor scrolls across any text in that "code" box the mouse cursor will not leave the box. If you don't believe me, try it on this thread:

(to which I am subscribed, and which has just had a reply). If I move the cusor ouside the "code" box -say below - and sufficently to the right to avoid the cusor crossing the text in the "code" box (in the posting) - then I can scroll up and down happily.

What you describe in post 7 is the expected functionality. The browser does this to allow you to scroll in the code box (if there is a scroll).

thanks for your reply. Yes, i do get back to the thread with my posting added, but I am suffering dreadfully, where I don't think that I suffered similarily in the past, trying to get back to a forum listing (or '0 replies') listing once I have replied to a thread and/or subscribed to a thread.

Thanks also for your second reply re scrolling through a code box - I guess I shall have to be ever more careful where I leave my cursor.

feel free to let me know when you get tired of this line of questions. nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition - and we can move on to the soft cushions! Or a pint of Guinness?

Well, back should work if you simply want to get back to the forum, but you'll likely have a somewhat stale view of it. Tabs is probably the best way really, but the breadcrumb in the new layout is vastly improved and should allow you to jump around somewhat. There's always the forumjump also, which will allow you to instantly jump to any forum on the site. As for "this line of questions" - keep them coming. Member feedback is the only way were going to continually improve.

Ok, I assume you are referring to a Firefox tab rather than a Ctrl-Tab keypress?

you didn't respond to my "Contributing Member" question - does this mean that I have to send a check/cheque payable to you personally in future if we want to see you and the Mods at the next LWE in London? I note that there is no "Contribute" button/reference on the Home page - or is it lost?

There are "Donate" and "Contributing Member" links on the bottom of every page. As for the Guinness, I'm always game ;)
