Thank you, your post gave me the pointer I was looking for. I was foogling around (no thats not a typo, its my word for what happens when you spend a while on a pointless web search) for commandline ways to change file associations.

I have Debian Squeeze + kde July edition, there is s slight variation- the properties box has a spanner icon, "edit file types", you can change it there, you will get a reassuring delay with dialogue "updating configuration"

Also look at the /etc/bash_completion file for media filetype that aren't expanded by tab completion after entering the player name in the terminal.

There should be a line where media filetypes are defined and inserting the filetype (e.g. flv|FLV) into the list will enable that file extension for tab completion of arguments.

eg:
Code:
                        _filedir '@(mp?(e)g|MP?(E)G|wm[av]|WM[AV]|avi|AVI|asf|ASF|vob|VOB|bin|BIN|dat|DAT|vcd|VCD|ps|PS|pes|PES|fli|FLI|viv|VIV|rm?(j)|RM?(J)|ra?(m)|RA?(M)|yuv|YUV|mov|MOV|qt|QT|mp[34]|MP[34]|og[gmv]|OG[GMV]|wav|WAV|dump|DUMP|mkv|MKV|m4a|M4A|aac|AAC|m2v|M2V|dv|DV|rmvb|RMVB|mid|MID|ts|TS|3gp|mpc|MPC|flac|FLAC|flv|FLV)'
So one may easily add a filetype without having to fully understand the tab completion file which can get pretty hairy. Grep for your application, another media player or an extension that works. It will probably indicate which line you want to edit.

Now you can have similar expectations in the GUI and the console.

Many thanks. In the end, the GUI's vary from one distro/version/box to another, but if you have the CLI method under your belt you can fix stuff quickly and reliably
