Tonight I was trying to change the default application handler for .mpgs on my computer, running Gentoo 2006.0 with Gnome 2.12. As is the case with Gnome (and yes, I still like Gnome best) configuring things can be trying. I went through all the Gnome settings, Nautilus preferences, until I finally discovered: application preferences are changed by right-clicking on the file in question, selecting properties, and going to the Open With tab, then selecting the application you want to use.
I spend too much time in the console, I suppose.
I just thought I'd share this tidbit in case anyone else is searching as well.
I am trying to make it open a video with mplayer. It wants to open it with totem. So I click on the tab, select mplayer, close the tab. I click on the file, and it still opens it with totem. I go back in and look, and mplayer is still selected. I try this as root, same thing. Totem can't play the file, but mplayer can.
